The inaugural season of the 15-SEASON FRANCHISE LEAGUE saw the four playoff teams as clearly the class of the season. No team finished closer than 10 games to the closest playoff participant.

The Cubs won the Western Division by 10 games over the Indians, and the Northsiders were led by 3 20-game winners in Pete Alexander(24-13), Mordecai Brown(22-16), and Jack Pfiester(22-14), with Bruce Sutter (35 Saves) anchoring the bullpen. The Cubs were led at the plate by Hack Wilson(.285, 66 HR, 166 RBI) and Rogers Hornsby(.346, 50 HR, 153 RBI), while Ernie BAnks inexplicably batted .191 for the season.

The A's ran away with the Central, obliterating the field by 20 games. They also swept the Awards Race. Jimmie Foxx was the league's MVP, batting .346, with 69 home Runs and 155 RBI. Chief Bender(25-11, 3.59 ERA) was the Cy Young Award Winner, and Dennis Eckersley's 38 Saves swept him to the Fireman of the Year Award. The A's also received offensive support from Mark McGwire, Al Simmons, and Reggie Jackson, while Eddie Plank(21-11) and Catfish Hunter(23-13) also won 20 games.

The Eastern Division provided the only excitement as the regular season wound down to the final series. The Giants led the Yankees by 1 game going into the last series. While the Yankees were winning 2 out of 3 from the Braves, the Giants were swept by Ty Cobb and the Tigers, who would not go down without a fight. The Yankees won the East by one game over the Giants.
The Division Champion Yankees were led on the mound by ROn Guidry(20-17), JAck Chesbro(22-13), and Whitey Ford(23-16). The muscle at the plate was provided by Lou Gehrig(50 HR, 139 RBI), Babe Ruth(59 HR, 143 RBI), Joe DiMaggio(.332, 141 RBI) and Mickey Mantle(59 HR, 124 RBI), but the greatest punch was packed by rightfielder Roger Maris(72 HR, 160 RBI).
The Wild Card Giants were a pitching-dominated team, with Christy Mathewson(21-17), Tim Keefe(23-13), and ERA leader Joe McGinnity(21-16, 3.36 ERA)leading the boys at Coogan's Bluff to the playoffs.

In the playoffs, the A's swept the Giants in 3 games, as Mark McGwire blasted 4 home runs to pace the attack. The Yankees and Cubs semifinal was hotly contested, culminating in a winner-take-all Game 5. Pete Alexander and Ron Guidry each went the distance. The Yankees jumped to an early 3-0 lead after two innings, and then hung on as the Cubs scored one each in the last three innings, giving Guidry the victory.

The World Series was a continuation of the New York beat-down that the A's administered to the Giants in the semifinals, as they defeated the Yankees 4 games to 2. The A's spotted the Bronx Bombers the first two games, then swept the next four to grab the World Championship. Post-Season MVP Mark McGwire hit 7 Home Runs in the four A's victories. After the series, Yankees manager George M. Cohan said, "That's a great team OVER THERE."

[size=18:d1602e6178][b:d1602e6178]SEASON #2 RECAP[/b:d1602e6178][/size:d1602e6178]

Once again, most pennant races were decided by Labor Day, leaving only the Wild Card race and Post-Season Awards up for grabs.

In the Eastern Division, the Cubs dominated the rest of the field, winning 101 games and finishing comfortably ahead of the Southside White Sox and the Indians. Cy Young Winner Pete Alexander went 25-11 with a 3.20 ERA, and was supported by Jack Pfiester (27-9, 3.91 ERA) and Bruce Sutter (37 Saves). Right-handed batters took advantage of Wrigley Field in Season #2. Hack Wilson was the MVP-Runner up with 61 HR and a league-leading 161 RBI. He was surrounded by secondbaseman Rogers Hornsby (.351, 141 RBI) and shortstop Ernie Banks (34 HR, 106 RBI).

The A’s won the Central by 13 games over the Tigers and by 15 over the Pirates. Lefty Grove led the staff with a 25-12 record, and leading the offensive attack was Rickey Henderson, who hit 44 HR to go along with 115 RBI, 128 Runs, and 46 stolen bases. Assisting Henderson were secondbaseman Eddie Collins (.344, 122 Runs) and rightfielder Reggie Jackson, whose power numbers of 48 HR and 134 RBI were all the more impressive for a left-handed batter in Shibe Park, long known as a boost to right-handed batters.

The Western Division was the closest pennant chase, as the Giants held out to win the title over the Reds. Starting Pitching led the day for the Giants, paced by Christy Mathewson (26-13, 3.60 ERA) and Juan Marichal (24-14). The Giants had only 63 relief innings for the season, eschewing their bullpen in favor of procuring innings and outs from their starters. Centerfielder Willie Mays won the MVP award, leading the league with 66 HR, finishing second in the league with 158 RBI, and scoring a league-leading 140 Runs. Providing left-handed complements to Mays were Willie McCovey (59 HR, 123 RBI) and Barry Bonds (54 HR, 144 RBI).
The Wild Card-winning Reds were polar opposites of their division rivals, as manager Sparky Anderson worked his bullpen magic, led by Clay Carroll’s 51 Saves. Frank Robinson was the Queen City’s offensive hero, with 47 HR, 139 RBI, and a .283 batting average. The Reds won the Wild Card by five games over the White Sox, who were led on the mound by Ed Walsh (22-14, 3.88 ERA) , firstbaseman Frank Thomas (41 HR, 123 RBI), and thirdbaseman Dick Allen (36 HR, 123 RBI).

In the Semi-Finals, the Giants beat the A's 3 games to 1, behind complete game wins from Carl Hubbell, Juan Marichal, and Joe "Iron Man" McGinnity. Frankie Frisch was the offensive leader for the Orange and Black, pounding out 7 hits in 4 games.
The underdog Reds took the Cubs to the limit, seeing the Northsiders eke out a 3 game to 2 series win. All-Star Cubs closer Bruce Sutter blew 2 saves and the Reds hung around, culminating in an awesome pitching matchup for Game 5---Cy Young Winner Pete Alexander for the Cubs and 2-time strikeout king Tom Seaver of the Reds. What a game it was, as Seaver struck out 18 Cubs in only 8 innings, while Alexander allowed a first inning run before settling down and shutting the Reds out for the rest of the game, with help by Sutter, who shut down the Reds for the final five outs to move the Cubs into the World Series. Rogers Hornsby had 3 hits, and Gabby Hartnett smashed his third home run of the series to score just enough to best Seaver.
The World Series was an exciting set of games, with momentum being seized, lost, and seized again by both teams. The Cubs jumped to a quick 2 game to zero lead on dominant pitching by Jack Pfiester and Mordecai Brown and timely hitting, led by Postseason MVP Rogers Hornsby. Game 3 looked to be more of the same, with Cy Young winner Pete Alexander taking a 1-0 lead into the 9th, but back-to-back homeruns by Barry Bonds and Willie Mays bounced the boys from Coogan’s Bluff right back into the series. The Cubs won Game 4 behind Rick Reuschel, and then the Giants won Games 5 and 6 in two hotly-contested games.
Game 7 was headlined by Alexander for the Cubs and McGinnity for the Giants. Mays and Tom Haller each homered to stake McGinnity to an early 3-0 lead, but Hack Wilson homered in the 3rd and Ernie Banks homered in the 4th to tie the game. A Freddie Lindstrom error in the 7th opened a gap, allowing the Cubs to push across 2 runs to take a 5-3 lead. Mays hit another home run in the 8th to bring the Giants to within one run, but Alexander showed why he was the best pitcher in baseball all season by finishing what he started. Just as Bill Terry’s fly to right settled into Jim Hickman’s glove , the World Series title settled into the North Side of Chicago.

Andy, my cousin gave me the edition that came out in '74 when I was 10 as a birthday gift. I never got any subsequent editions b/c I was too busy going through all the old timers. Besides, after '73, the Mets stunk and I was just as happy focusing on the good years. Your recaps are great, but any thought to giving the season's titles (my favorite was for '71: Fast and Blue and Wait Until Next Year -- referring to the soon-to-be dynasty in Oakland).
