Computer pulling the the best closer in save situation?

Computer pulling the the best closer in save situation?

Postby blades97 » Wed Mar 24, 2010 7:47 am

Anyone know if this makes sense or is it just a glitch ?

Why would the computer pull my R2/C6 closer a the start of the ninth
after a perfect 8th inning, when he is set up with a slow hook,
and a 2 or 3 innings max and I also have not checked him to
avoid righties or lefties because he is strong against both,
also I checked "IBB less with this pitcher" because he can face either
side effectively.

He is the best reliever in the set ( Armando Benitez 2004) and it
seems that I can't get the computer to use him, but it loves to
bring in the scrubs even in save situations despite Benetiz being
set up as my closer from both sides. And also I tried to set him
up for use after both the 7th and 8th innings, but that didn't help.

Any help or comments ?

I've found that naming your stud reliever as both set-up man and closer (against RH and LH) in the manager strategy settings tends to up the number of innings he gets.

I don't know if you have another reliever with a closer ranking. If so, maybe Hal wants to have him play too. You could set him (the reliever, not Hal, nobody sets Hal) to come in earlier.

Don't know if this works for you. Maybe others have a different take on the situation.

Thanks, that will be my next move, to also use him as
a set up guy too and see what happens. And now that you
mentioned it the other 2 relievers from the right side that
Hal tries to bring in have a C0 and C1 rating. Neither of
the lefties have a closer rating. But thanks again I
appreciate the input.

You're welcome.

Just checked your teams (we're in a 2006 league together). Given your almost prodigy-like start to your online career (and my over-the-hill-before-it-starts start to my career :( ), I think I should be asking you for advice. :)

In any event, good luck with your teams. BTW, you're in a great division in 2006 for learning.

Thanks, I'm glad I found this online version, I bought the SOM cards/ table top sets for over 20 years, but probably haven't played for 10 or 15 yrs., even though I bought them just to collect. I was more familiar with
the basic version, so the advanced rules and how "Hal" run things
are interesting to figure out. But now that I have the time, I'm glad they had the on-line trial version to help out us newbies. Good luck in that 06' league and hope to see you in the playoffs.

Closer pulled

Postby ROBERTLATORRE » Wed Mar 24, 2010 4:14 pm

A few of us have been playing the CDROM game and really digging into the Super HAL settings that TSN is leveraging.

One thing we have learned is that SUPER HAL can start the beginning of the 9th inning in a close opportunity and execute the "closer" SUPER HAL logic, and if it does, HAL will ignore the pitcher in the game when selecting the closer to bring in. With the R2/C6 it doesn't make sense but our league has seen it happen a lot. In the CDROM game there is a "FORCE" option and with that clicked HAL will ignore fatigue more often. TSN hasn't tied into that setting in their interface.

A couple questions:

Are there any other "C" rated rps in your pen?

Did Benitez pitch in either of the previous 2 games, could he have been fatigued already?

We're a month into the season in our "research" league and every weeks worth of games gives us a couple puzzles to figure out.

I'm not sure how TSN has the "Closer" rules defined, but my guess is that it is limited to the 9th inning for a close and the 8th inning looks at the setup man rules.

Also make sure you have your closer setting set to regular instead of maximize of you want him to last in there longer

Latorrer,
thanks for the input, I just went back and looked up your questions and now I'm even more stumped at why Hal likes to pull Benetiz.

"Are there any other "C" rated rps in your pen?
Yes there are 2 righties - a CO and C1 and no lefties with closer ratings

" Did Benitez pitch in either of the previous 2 games, could he have been fatigued already? "

Benetiz hadn't pitched in 2 games and in that game he pitched to one
batter for the last out of the 8th and then he was pulled by Hal in the
9th for a pitcher with no closer rating.
And what I also found that's worse is Hal pulled Benetiz after the perfect 8th inning for a pitcher who went 2 innings the night before and had pitched 3 days in a row.

I guess Hal doesn't like Armando or maybe he thinks he is working his
way back from Tommy John surgery.
But either way I don't think I like Hal's managing, LOL

Blades,

The only thing we've seen in our league so far is that if HAL considers the start of the 9th as a "Closer" opportunity, he is going to go through the logic for selecting a closer, and if there is another closer in the pen, he could bring him in, IGNORING the pitcher in the game already. The logic kicks in looking for a new pitcher.

That is the only downside about setting up a Closer in both the setup and closer role.

The only caveat here is that I don't know how TSN has defined the closer role in the interface, in the CDROM game it's very granular and you can define it any way you want, so it is subjective.

So no clear cut explanation unfortunately.
