Roger Repoz

I was just looking at his card for the first time in a long while. I cannot for the life of me figure why SOM valued him at $3.6M. Sure, he's versatile and has good ratings at 4 positions, but his best season is below average and his two worst seasons are just terrible. He is an average runner, can't bunt or hit and run, yada yada. This card screams $.75M, maybe $1M because of the defense.

Has anyone ever gotten a decent full season out of him?

I agree with Paulie Walnuts about him being overpriced.

His HR/AB ratio is pretty good actually if you look past his batting average. If he was priced in the mid $1s I would try him occasionally, but never have for almost $4.

I think Repoz is probably the most overpriced player in the set. He's the poster boy for the need to reprice the 70s set.

Were to begin???....

1. He's an odd choice to have in the 70's game to start considering he amassed a grand total of [b:f5a85369b2]707[/b:f5a85369b2] ABs for the decade
2. Hard to even call him a defensive specialist because othe than the e3 rating a 2(-1) is no great grab especially when you need the big arm in RF and the range and arm in CF
3. His best card is a .759 OPS...you can get better than that from a middle infielder
4. Imagine how ridiculous this choice is...I need a starting LF who's not too expensive and can give me some punch...should I take Repoz or F Howard????

It actually calls to mind a two fold scenario...one is that Repoz is overpriced and two Howard is underpriced.

Barbie I agree with most of your picks here, but Matthews is only a wee bit overpriced and you are paying for consistency there. Briggs and Milner come to mind as overpriced LF's in front of Matthews. As for Otis, he is overpriced but the few times I have used him (theme leagues) I got one of his two best years and my teams made the playoffs.

If you are going for an "overpriced bums" team I might switch out a few and go with these guys:

Along with the more successful Bobby Murcer, Roger Repoz labored under media predictions that he would be the next Mickey Mantle while in the New York Yankees' farm system. Although Repoz was an impressive-looking athlete with good speed and considerable power, he was never able to hit for much of an average. Repoz held the record for lowest batting average by a major league outfielder with 2,000+ AB until Rob Deer broke it. As of 1999, he had the 18th lowest batting average among infielders or outfielders with over 2,000 AB. His OPS+ in the majors was a respectable 105, though.

Repoz was nicknamed "The Destroyer" during his years with the Angels due to his tendency to destroy dugout water coolers after strikeouts.

At age 30, Roger hit .199/.333/.374 for the 1971 Angels but his combination of walks and power again kept his OPS+ over 100 (107) and he was the top offensive force in the California outfield.

Roger moved to Japan in 1973, signing with the Taiheiyo Club Lions and hitting .220/.312/.430. The next year, he joined the Yakult Swallows. He batted .232/.331/.486 for the 1974 club with 25 homers. In 1975, he made the Best Nine with a .292/.373/.527 season, smashing 27 home runs to go with his new-found contact hitting. He joined Hiroaki Inoue and Koji Yamamoto in being honored as the top three outfielders in the Central League. That year, he also hit the 15,000th homer in CL history, doing so on May 18.

At age 35 in Japan, the veteran produced at a .274/.374/.571 clip in 1976, crushing 36 home runs, driving in 81 and scoring 79. He fell to .263/.328/.490 in 1977 with 22 HR and it would be his final season. In either 1976 or 1977, Repoz, Clyde Wright and Charlie Manuel fought the East German hockey team in a Japanese club after the hockey players had been hassling a woman there. The Americans got the worse part of the brawl.
