LM, while in general I agree with you, there are a lot of different ways to play this game. I won 7 championships in 2008, and on only one of those teams did I not make a move (according to Bernie's new handy dandy 'players you dropped' guide). Twice I made 13 moves, twice 7, 3 and 2 once. I'm not sure how many of those leagues had 5/10/20 rule, though, and I'm more likely to drop if it's a 10% hit.
In addition to Al's injured player, I make moves for (at least) 2 other reasons: first to adjust to changes made by the other managers in the league. If you're playing in a league with all good players (like the Tour), they will adjust to you. I adjust around 54, 81, and 126 games, adjusting to the league, division, and if I'm ahead, to the playoff opponents.
I also drop because I use a lot of cheap pitchers, and I can use drops almost like I had a farm team, if I'm careful. Those are low dollar moves, though.
I agree with you completely though in that you can't drop a lot of money and win. If you see me dropping a lot of $ (like in the 2009 league we're in together), it's a sign I don't think I can win, and am either trying a desperate gamble, or trying out different players for future reference.
I can attribute at least one of those championships to a major move I made as we went into division play, a gamble, but I was pretty sure who my playoff opponents would be, and in that case the gamble worked. Low risk gamble, though.
