Murray vrs Garvey

Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

I've had better luck with Garvey and, since I like a good defensive club, I love the 1 fielding rating.

The one problem with Garvey is that he's right-handed. Since there's a paucity of decent lefty third-basemen in 70's (and lefty catchers, and lefty middle infielders), I really like to have a lefty at first. Otherwise, my teams get too righty-heavy.

But Murray tends to under-perform for me, while Garvey is solid. Go figure.

I loved Murray until I got his 1980 card on an injury reveal. I was happy at first, but that 4L is just brutal. He was hitting .220 with 8 home runs at game 81, so I cut him. Made the playoffs with Jim Dwyer over there instead, haha.

update: Garvey's frustrating me to no end :)

.263-.283-.411-.694 in 236 AB.

The OBP is just god-awful. I'm pretty sure it's '74 because he's got a lot of doubles and there are no walks on that card.

Here is a Murray vrs Garvey update regarding my league.

Murray: 143AB 5 2B 10 HR .308 avg .897 ops
Not too bad. I suspect I have his 79 season, but I can't say for sure.

Garvey: 158AB 8 2B 2 3B 8 HR .437 avg 1.116 ops

Needless to say I am kicking myself for not making the switch to Garvey.

I've never used Murray, and I've used Garvey several times.

There is one "disadvantage" of Garvey: If you get an injury reveal, you have one of his two worst cards (though one of them is still ok).

So, you can never confirm you have one of Garvey's best years. Of course, having a card where he can't get injured is more than a fair trade!

Garvey's final numbers (1974 season):

156g 621ab 77r 174h 44d 3t 13hr 88bi 21bb 73k .280-.299-.424-.723

yuck.

I've had 38 70s teams and I just realized that I never used Garvey or Murray. I guess I feel a kinship to Mike Epstein (whom I frequently use).

Howdy,

I had Murray on one of my Astrodome teams and he hit 35 HRs!
