Interstitial Ads - Bad Idea

Postby c_montgomery_burns » Sat Apr 17, 2010 10:46 pm

Never mind, I found it. For those that care, it's found on the "Add-ons" menu for Firefox, under the Tools drop-down menu.

I agree. Why do we have to endure that when we pay for the service already? I am really getting fed up with TSN. Once my two credits are done, I am strongly considering being done here. Especially with all the recent site problems.

Going back on my promise

Postby ROBERTLATORRE » Mon Apr 19, 2010 1:10 pm

I promised myself that after my self imposed hiatus from TSN, that I would only post positive comments.

Oh well, time to hand in my chip and start over. I've been in a few of Jeep's leagues and have been in a number of leagues with TomSiebert, so I want to chime in as well.

I am in agreement with the opinion that these types of ads are out of place for a site I am paying $100/month for (1 5 pack per month). There is ad-space on the regular pages without having to pop up these forced click through ads.

Is it only one click and a few seconds every time it pops up? Yes, but for $100 per month I would expect that I wouldn't have to see these.

The introduction of these ads can be looked at a couple ways:

1) TSN needs these ads to make this site profitable. Combine that with the recent shutdown of the fantasy games, it does not look promising for our little game, which would stink.

2) TSN misjudged the customers expectation and tolerance for these types of ads and will pull them off.

3) TSN knew that there would be customer dissatisfaction but introduced them anyway to get the ad fees.

What's at stake financially? Depending on the ad service the site would receive a fee per 1000 times the ad pops up (anywhere from $1 to $5 per 1000, depends on a number of variables) and then another fee of 25 cents to $1 for every time someone actually clicks through on the ad to go to the advertisers site. These are ballpark numbers but will give you a general idea of the financial impact. This isn't my specific area of expertise.

At a minimum TSN could pick an ad service that would limit the popup ad to once per day per IP address.

This is a black-eye to the site in my opinion.

If what latorrer says is true and I have no reason to doubt him I suggest that we click on the adds as many times as poosible. TSN will generate extra income and can make the games free for us. Everytime you click on the add they make .25 and after 100 times you get a free game! I know this is not the point but it would make the games free and for only about 1 hr a night you could get alot of free games. Making lemons into lemonade so to speak.    Mike

alas if it would only work that way. TSN execs would just be pocketing the extra cash we'd be making for them.

I have switched to firefox. I prefer IE but until I can find ad blocking software to stop this nonsense will stay with firefox. I do not mind some ads to make money as long as they are unobtrusive and do not prevent me from doing what I am on the site to do.

Between these stupid ads and the popups wanting you to do surveys it is enough to make you find a new hobby. I find myself wishing I had not just bought a fresh 5-pack. If the cable company ever agrees to bring service to my house AT&T will get kicked out of my house for their part in shoving their ads down my throat.

I don't see how that will help. It would only justify to TSN that it was a good idea to put it on in the first place. Why would they take it off if they were making money on it? It's a sign of the times. And for me perhaps the last straw for TSN and stratomatic on TSN.
