Position Draft League - CHAT

Postby emart » Mon May 17, 2010 1:23 pm

League rules:

1. Players may only be drafted using the primary position on the drafted card (in the live draft). For example, Ruth 1921 has a primary position of LF, so the 1921 card can only be drafted for the LF position, not for RF, 1B or CF. Once the league begins, a player may be played at any eligible position on the card being used, and managers may swap cards for players with multiple cards (see **below).
2. In the case of players with multiple cards, managers must indicate the year of the card drafted.
3. During the live draft, managers may trade draft positions during a round, but no players may be traded until after waivers.
4. A ballpark draft round will be inserted following round 6, independent of the position draft, in reverse order of the original draft order (manager who drafted first in the 1st round will draft last in the ballpark draft).
5. Manager drafting order established by randomizer.
6. Order of draft for player positions (1-12) by separate randomizer.
7. Time limit between picks - 3 hours.
8. Draft clock is off from midnight–9 a.m. (eastern) Monday–Friday, and all day Saturday and Sunday.
9. Divisional alignment by randomizer once live draft is complete.

Additional league rules:
1. Any live-drafted player must remain on a team roster for the entire season.
2. Following waivers, cards for the same player may be exchanged.
3. Players may play at any eligible position for the card used, [b:058ecdc807]except those selected during the DH round, who must play DH for the entire season. [/b:058ecdc807]

Doesn't having the DH pick for the 6th round mean that effectively the guys picking first at the hitter slots in the last five rounds are getting the 2nd 3rd or 4th choice at their position? Although I guess otherwise the dh round becomes a leftovers round.

Agreed. I was just talking to BobBoone on the phone and we were talking about that very thing. Though not listed in the rules we thought that the player chosen for your DH should have to remain at DH.

I like that idea. That seems fair, because in theory if someone was picking near the end of a round after the DH round, they could totally fleece the system so to speak.

Let's say Manager X is drafting #4 in the DH round but has the #11 in the SS round. Why not take Wagner (or Banks or whomever) in the DH round when you know that player would not be there in the SS round. Then in the SS round, that manager would take a bench depth player a la John Ward. And know that there would still be some decent value in the FA wire for the DH slot later.

With this rule, if you still want Wagner, fine, but he's your DH, not your SS.

I do agree with this sentiment. However, I am picking first in the DH round, I really don't want my only first pick to be meaningless.

Good discussion on the DH issue. I was thinking about how having the DH at round 6 affected the later rounds.

One idea that occurred to me was to condition the DH round so that the player must be a '3' or '4' at their primary position to qualify.

I think I like the idea that the player you select at DH must play there. Could be complications when HAL is making in-game decisions or when managing injuries, and it could be difficult to monitor.

The initial thinking on the DH selection was to position it at round 12 rather than include it in the randomized position placement. Would that be something to consider at this point?

I'm pushing this out quickly without considering the options fully, so I may not be making sense.....

Should we HOLD the draft until we resolve the issue?

More discussion is definitely called for.

BobBoone, has a point. too. Obviously, someone in an earlier round, picking late, could trump the DH round by taking a coveted player. For example, in the CF round, a manger picking late (after the Mantles, Charlestons, Cobbs, Speakers, Mays are all gone) might draft Hack Wilson with the intention of playing him at DH and not CF. And now a great DH option has been removed before the DH round comes up...

Maybe it's too late to change it up, but maybe we should not have DH in the list of positions?
Maybe swap it out for another SP-only?
And change the P to SP/RP, since people could neuter the RP-only round (which is last) by taking RP-only in the P round (which is 3rd)?

This was a situation that I considered when the rules were being put together, combined with the rule that says that once selected, a player can play at any eligible position on the card used. They just have to be on a roster.

I felt that it would make the drafting strategy more interesting and complex to allow a manager to make a selection like Hack Wilson late in the CF round and then play him at DH. Perhaps I didn't think it through all the way, but right now it still sounds pretty reasonable. Still thinking and posting quickly.

Suspended the draft in the meantime.
