Tigers Stadium advice needed

Postby jschrah » Tue Jun 08, 2010 2:58 pm

What do you think of my team? It's been a while since I have had a Tigers Stadium team and could use the advice.

Thanks for any advice you can give me!

Regardless of the stadium, I don't like so many lefty starters on the roster. I don't like to have more than 2, but that's just my opinion.
Really though, we need to see your team after waivers to better suggest changes. I'm not a fan of Smalley, but I take it there's probably not much available from the SS position. Other than that, it looks OK to me so far.

Hi j... I don't want to say too much here, because I am in the same league as your new team, but I just completed my first try in Tiger, went 85-77 but missed playoffs. I won't go too much into specifics for risk of giving out trade secrets to the competition, but:

if you are going with all lefty starters just because of the short porch in RF, don't. I would take a "reverse righty" over a lefty who gives up too many homers any day if I were you

I'll comment on 1 specific player...Goose Gossage is a keeper as your closer... I didn't even have his best card, and he was downright unhittable

maybe it was just my poor luck, but I had a LOT of problems with poor defense on the corners in Tiger, both corner INF and corner OF; it wasn't until I made a bunch of changes and improved my D that I started winning. I have had poor defensive teams before, but Tiger Stadium home games seemed to magnify a lot of defensive shortcomings... again, maybe it was just my experience, though

Good luck except when you play me :D

Nothing wrong with lots of LH starters. Consider Browning or Jackson.

Gibson makes a good LF for Tiger and can bat 2nd if needed. You have Thomson, Jackson and Kingman. They cannot all DH at the same time (or are you platooning JT and DK?). Keep Jackson at DH. Find a nice RF (Hayes?) (unless you're staring Reggie) and SS upgrade (Dunston?),

You need to make sure your hitters have 'N' power

Get some cheap LH RP (Mirabella, Caerman, McClure)

Starting pitching looks solid. The key will be the draft. You need another slugger in the outfield (Gibson?) and maybe an upgrade at 3rd base. Actually, you need as many sluggers as you can get. I am not a fan of Tiger Stadium....too many things can go wrong, left-handed pitchers have bad years.....your sluggers crap out. Smalley is fine. I use him a lot when the top tier is gone. He'll give you homer power with only minimal defense penalty. Horner doesn't excite me. If Cey is there, get him. Porter is iffy, usually under performs in Tiger and everywhere. Overall, this team looks pretty good.

I like 9 lefties against righties and 9 righties against lefties in any stadium. Sure, that gives reverse lefties and reverse righties an advantage but how many reverse pitchers tilt more than 2R or 2L (whatever that means)? Much, much, much less than straight pitchers that are 5R or 5L (whatever that means).

That being said, I wouldnt get too bogged down on the righty/lefty thing. You want goo cards. Tiger stadium is not that dramatically different for righties and lefties. Its a HR park either way.
Without knowing who the free agents are:

1. Id switch Dedmon for a lefty reliever., if there are any. Might even get an extra lefty reliever if there are 2 decent ones available. Nothing to do with Tiger stadium. Goose and Burke are both excellent but severely R tilting.

2. Not a huge fan of Porter but wouldnt surprise me if there isnt anything better available.

3. Kingman's 79 year is great but any other year is not worth that cash. There are alot of crappy fielding 1B who are cheaper and have one or two great years against lefties. That 79 year is pretty ridiculous though so if you have extra cash.

4. JAson thompson=underated. Randolph=overated but all the 2Bs suck. Not telling you to drop Randolph by any means, just wish there were better options. Randolph is clearly one of the top 3 2Bs in the game in my mind.

5. who is Wayne Tolleson?

6. Here is my theory on Bob Horner. He is not bad. If you have him on your team when the season starts, there is no reason to ever drop him unless you randomly pick up a Nettles or Walling with some extra cash and get their good year. Horner's worst year and best year dont seem to deviate that much. If every player on your team is as good as Bob Horner you will have an above average team, have about 85 wins and not make the playoffs. That is actually my theory on Stratomatic 80s in general. I have said too much.

7. If you dont get Uribe's 87 year.... well, thre probably still wont be anything better available. Whatever happened to OL? I was always hoping to get some article about the run differential between a "2" and "3" at SS. I really, really wish I knew if Smalley was worth it. I will say I have had Smalley on my team alot.

8. you should try to get a CF to hit against lefties and can backup for Lynn when he is injured. I just wish such a player existed. Id bet that GYoung isnt available and he is really not that good anyway.

9. Other than comment 1, you can ignore all the above babbling except for this (or, feel free to ignore this too): There must be someone better than Roenike available to play LF. Gibson, if you are lucky. With Jackson in right, Id avoid another "4" but still. For what Roenick does, Id rather have Deer. But, Id consider Oglvie, Downing, GBell, BoJackson and Lowenstein.

I have to disagree on the Bob Horner opinions. I like him a lot, and I don't think all the seasons perform similarly.
How often do you get this kind of performance from a 4 million player?

I know it's the Kingdome, but even if you tone those numbers down a little, they're still very good.

Other than his 79 season, then yeah, there's not much difference between the other 4.

Thanks for all of the advice. Posting what I have currently as far as lineup ideas.

c porter
1b Clark
2b Randolph
3b DeCinces
ss Smalley Jr.
lf Oglivie
cf Lynn
rf Jackson
dh Kingman (lhp) Thompson (rhp)

Mirabella is available, would you dump Robinson or Fraser to pick him up?

Am I off my rocker, or would proposing this trade make sense for me.

W. Clark, B. Horner, and D. Porter for G. Carter, J. Canseco, Ron Jackson.

I figure that I can platoon Kingman and Thompson at 1B and make Canseco my DH. Can pick up a serviceable 3b.

What do you think?

Horner is rock solid and will always drive in run and slg in the neighborhood if .500 everywhere.
