HAL stepped out for a beer?

Down 10-1 going into the top of the 9th, HAL gave up! Or perhaps he just went to get a beer?

Anyhow, poor reliever Bobby Seay was already at F0 going into the inning. After 8 hits and 2 walks -- and 10 runs for the other guys -- HAL finally took Seay out and shot him, to put him out of his misery.

Has anybody ever seen a performace like this before?

Well, it's probably what you want in that situation. I'm guessing a bit here, but Seay was probably the last guy in your bullpen except for your very expensive closer. You probably had Street set to not be used in a blowout and Seay was then in "mopup" role. HAL will really let him take a beating because he doesn't want to waste your closer in a game he thinks you can't win.

Unfortunately, he got hammered so bad HAL put Street in anyway, so it was such a blowout that basically nothing worked in your favor!

But, to answer your question, I've seen mopop situations get really out of hand quite a few times before. 11 earned 1+ is pretty impressive though, and it wasn't like he was up against murder's row. He even faced the pitcher twice! Yet more proof that F0 is really bad.

What is truly amazing is that Seay's ERA only went to 3.44 after giving up 11 runs

I'm no longer sure that F0 is all that bad. Check this one out:

I've noticed that tends to happen a lot in those really long extra inning games. Guys will rack up a ton of innings at F0, piling on the zeroes despite all the logic seemingly going against such a feat.

Well, in all logic, it cannot be otherwise. Most of the times, a pitcher throwing at F0 will be pounded by hits/walks, so the games won't extend. The games will extend only if there are a lot of F0 innings (at least, in most of our Strat leagues where we go with a short bullpen of 4-5 guys).

In any case, don't be fooled by the results.

Look at where the dice landed during those F0:

27:on offensive cards
17: on the pitcher cards

And I would guess that the teams were a bit lucky. Usually, the ratio is closer to 2:1, like it was in the case of Bobby Seay when he allowed 10 earn runs.
