Last night (Thursday), while looking over the newest (9/16/10) games, I was surprised to note that all the players were wearing goatees and jockeying for position to take over the team by assassinating the manager. Also, after the last out of the play-by-play, the game summary read "The end ... OR IS IT??" and there was ominous music. But then today I looked at the games again, and everything was back to normal. So ... was it all a dream? ... and if it was just a dream -- then where did the SAND IN MY SHOES come from???

Ahh, so you have discovered Klingon baseball. The Klingons were first introduced to baseball by Captain Benjamin Sisco of the space station Deep Space 9. Assassination of the manager is just one of the variations as it was established in the Klingon Empire. When the manager summons a reliever from the bullpen he must defeat the current pitcher in battle on the pitcher's mound and take the ball from him. If he kills the starting pitcher he then assumes that man's turn in the rotation for future games. If he fails the pitcher remains in the game for one more batter and another reliever is then given the chance to relieve the starter. Similar rituals are followed for attempting to send in a pinch runner or pinch hitter.

Klingon games last a bit longer than Federation baseball games. But you never see a Klingon baseball player sticking around past his prime struggling along on diminished skills. And of course all players who die on the baseball field go to a special place in stovacore where they have the privilege of competing 24/7 against the greats who arrived before them, Ruth, Pete, Cy Josh Gibson, and yes even Cool Papa Bell.
