Players you won't use....

Postby wesleyeugeneclark » Fri Nov 12, 2010 12:40 pm

What are the players that you would never use on your teams? I know in the 70's game I will never use Rusty Staub again...I can never seem to get a good season out of him...also in the 90's I have used Shane Mack for the last time...dude always seems to be injured for me....

Mark Belanger. If I want a weak hitting 1 at SS I will use the equally anemic, yet cheaper, Roger Metzger. Dave Winfield, Bruce Sutter, Andre Thornton off the top of my head.

Cuellar and Cedeno

Postby Larryrickenbacker » Sun Nov 14, 2010 5:33 pm

Howdy,

I've never had much luck with the seemingly attractive Mike Cuellar. Jim Wynn and Cedeno have never performed for me, either.
Rusty Staub? He's always been a steady, solid Lefty hitter for me. Belanger I've had three times. One season at Arlington stadium he chipped in with pretty good hitting.
Tangential note: Sometimes I think that it's simpler to just draft the seldom injured Brinkman (a "2") at SS for .75 cents with say, a 7th round pick and spend your Metzger money (and the necessary high round draft pick) elsewhere. Metzger is usually [i:823283cb47]gone[/i:823283cb47] by the 4th round in most 70s leagues. YMMV

Almost nobody?

Postby Outta Leftfield » Sun Nov 21, 2010 8:55 pm

There's almost nobody I wouldn't use in some extreme situation in the 70s or 90s, but the 80s has some badly priced players--like, famously, Eric Plunk--who really have no appeal whatsoever.

I will never use Mel Hall. There's no room for child molesters on my team.

I will also try my best to avoid anyone priced 6.66 mil, which is too bad because I really like Gary Carter.

Well my most disliked player from all the mystery card games is Barry Bonds. Yeah I've used him........this is just a game after all. :)

I will never use Eric Plunk unless forced to in a theme league. Langston, Eric King and Dusty Baker all have bad reps from the 80's game but I have used them, especially Baker who generally does well for me.

I likely would never use Mike Stanley, Ruben Rivera, Candy Maldonado, Lonnie Smith, Jarvis Brown, Ron Tingley, Phil Nevin or Turner Ward from the 90s game

I actually agree with you assessment of Baker. I don't quite understand why he has a bad rep. He could be quite good actually.

King and Langston would be better if they were cheaper.

King IMO has 2 usable seasons, and neither of them are really lights out. He also generally does a good job of keeping the ball in the park, and because of the HR percentages, it's generally easy to tell if you have one of his good seasons. However, he's not even a * starter and 5.62M is quite high for what you get.

Langston IMO is the poster boy of overpriced. The overall on base numbers are bad for all 5 seasons, but it's because his walks are high. He has maybe 2 seasons I would consider keeping, but for 7.07M, it's just not worth it. When the salaries for these players were made, there was too much of an emphasis on walks and strikeouts. Strikeouts drive the price up too much and walks don't drop the price enough. Since Langston has a lot of both, he gets screwed. It's also why Nolan Ryan costs so much.

All of the above listed players I would and have used in the past.

However, the same things mentioned about Langston could also be said for Mitch Williams, he is a player I won't ever use because he's overpriced by 2.98M. At least they priced him right in the 90s game.

not a guy i wont use bc he stinks

Postby guardman9 » Tue Nov 30, 2010 6:41 pm

but i will never again suffer the dale murphy syndrome. dude always starts off the first 100 games like ***, i drop him and hes 1200 ops the rest of the way for someone else. 4 times with 12 teams that has hapened, and i never used him for the other 8

as for the 90s, larkin gets a bad rep bc of the price, but wholly crap, had him in a two team theme, he hit his big ops year and had a 1066 ops for me with 164 runs scored and 128 rbi.......from the leadoff spot!

Take Roger Repoz's best card, and he still isn't worth half of what he cost in the 70s game.

I used Ellis Valentine once, got his best card, and was quite happy with him. Next time I looked at this card again, realized how lucky I was, and I haven't drafted him since.
