70s Grich: A Reappraisal

Howdy,

After two very successful seasons with Grich at Royals stadium, I'm reassesing the $8.97 mil 2nd baseman.
He's turned a chronic weakspot into a strength defensively and offensively. He's also got power and produces RBIs.
I can select him fairly low in the draft, saving my precious higher picks for more popular players. I'm learning to be content with medium wage outfielders as compensation, like Gary Matthews and/ or Bernie Carbo, to name a few. Chime in.

The few times I have had him resulted in good RBI numbers, so-so OBP and low .220-.230ish averages. I never drafted him but I have "rescued" him from the pool.

I am also a fan of 70s Grich.
I've had pretty good success with him. He has pretty good OBP numbers every season and is a 1 defensively.

His 79 card is a beast and can perform anywhere, but the prob is the other 4 cards if not a avg+ hitter park won't do a lot. You'll get decent OBP and if you can get him to successfully steal some bases he might score runs, but don't expect him to be a big run producer in those parks.

His non-monster card can be very tough to take in a non-hitting park. Lots of $$$ for a maybe a second or ewen a seventh or eighth batter.

On my current Royals stadium club, Grich has an OBP of .407 and an OPS of .903 after 500+ ABs. This is obviously only a single season, but it's typical of what Grich has done for me in the three seasons I've had him. I find these results encouraging.
But please, please [i:a970fb09a3]puh-leeze[/i:a970fb09a3], don't get me started on Jim Wynn! The Toy Cannon just flat out, doesn't [i:a970fb09a3]like[/i:a970fb09a3] me. YMMV.

Toy Cannon similar to Grich IMO, they don't really belong in non-hitting parks, unless you get Grich's best. They walk a lot and have some pop, two qualities that lend themselves more to a hitting park enviroment.
