Rule mistake?

Postby Ragnarokpc » Mon Jan 17, 2011 3:43 am

Hey, encountered this tonight and found it odd. Unless I'm mistaken, once a pitcher is brought into a game, he must face one batter, regardless of what the situation of his appearance is. In this case, Eckersley got hurt. A reliever was summoned, and a pinch hitter appropriate to the pitcher brought in, when another pitcher was summoned.

*** TOP OF INNING 9 ***
SUBSTITUTE 3B- Enos Cabell
0 W.Clark 1 Double b-2
0 2 P.Incaviglia 4 Strike Out b-0
1 2 C.Castillo 5 Ground Out b-0
SUBSTITUTE P - Mark Grant
D. Eckersley Injured for 15 more games
SUBSTITUTE PH- Dave Concepcion
SUBSTITUTE P - Todd Worrell
2 2 D.Concepcion 3 Ground Out b-0

Grant should have faced Concepcion. I'm not worried about this as a "I got cheated" thing, but I don't think Grant gets a pass just because Eck was hurt; he still has to face a batter. So what happened? Why was he allowed to be pulled? Generally this doesn't happen.

That's an excellent point. The only thing I could think of is that perhaps after an injury, and exception is made?
That's the only reason I could think of. I agree that Grant should have had to pitch to at least 1 batter.

i also agree, I wonder if it is a glitch that no one had caught yet... I can't imagine it happens that often.
