Experiment just under way

Experiment just under way

Postby Eddie E » Sat Jan 22, 2011 5:52 pm

I decided to try something unusual. I placed the top 4 SP* as my top 4 picks and then selected nothing but 4 fielding players at EVERY position while playing in Petco. Wondering if quality SP can overcome poruous defense. Of course, I attempted to get the best hitting 4's that I could and the nice thing about this strategy is that I could put most of the hitters lower on the draft list since they arent highly sought after due to their defense. I pretty much got everything I asked for except my 2nd and 3rd SP picks (Greinke and Vazquez) I still have four very good starters. My offense looks like this:

C Johjima
1B M Cabrera
2B Coghlan
SS platoon Keppinger/Cairo
3B Reynolds
LF M Ramirez
CF platoon Bautista/Fukudome
RF G Jones
DH Lind

even my reserves are 4's !

Can I get away with it?

No.It would be a success if you lose less than 90.

If you're going to do this strategy, at least get some guys that hit better in that park and get guys that have lower E ratings. Reynolds is a terrible fit and Coghlan makes too many errors. That park needs guys that hit for high average and hit lots of doubles.

How about Skip Schumaker in a platoon at 2B? Aramis Ramirez at 3B?

I also think this strategy will be unsuccessful, but mostly because there just aren't enough guys in this year's set who are 4s in the field but hit well enough to compensate. Also if you're really serious, I'd try to get one of those other pitchers in a trade. Get rid of Pineiro.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback. I have tried to acquire those pitchers that I didnt get but so far no luck. They arent budging on trading them to me. I will see what adjustments I can make to add more hits and extra base hits for Reynolds. What do you think of McGehee at 2b and Callaspo at 3B? options as you say are limited with 4 fielders being the only pool I am drawing from.

Another thing to consider is that players are priced based on their primary position and their best fielding position(s). For instance, you're paying for Fukudome to play RF, but you're putting him in CF. At least with guys like Cabrera, Johjima, and Lind, you're paying directly for that terrible defense.

I think this strategy would be more successful using only those kind of guys and in a 60M league since you wouldn't have to stretch the money as much on hitting. Good luck finding a 60M 20xx league, though :roll:

Thanks again. I've commited to this idea purely out of curiousity so I want to see it through to see just how bad, mediocre or good this team could be. I will dig a little deeper to see what other options I might have but regardless, I will post results for all to stare in horror at. :lol:

I predict a horrible crash and burn for this team. On the road you are going to give up runs in bunches fairly frequently, and with such a horrible bullpen you probably won't come back and win hardly any of those games even with great offense. You need at least one decent R2 out in the pen. I don't think Cordero and a bunch of R1 specialists are going to cut it.

Too many error prone 4s in there too.

Should have some humorous box scores...

Ok, I had to make a few assumptions, but team rating looks like this:

O Rating -> 7818
P Rating -> 4606
Fielding -> 1240
P+F -> 5846
Overall -> 1972

That's assuming 80% IP from your SPs and Cordero and Wheeler getting the bulk if the RP IP.

I agree with the above. You had enough cap room to get some good hitters, just didn't do so. You hit well enough v RHP, but LHP? Nah.

The fielding sucks, but the E-rats that he ended up with aren't that bad.

In any case, here's a team I spent about 20 minutes playing with.

martinez,v
fielder,p
mcgehee,c
tejada,m
kennedy,a/Roberts
ramirez,m
choo,s
abreu,b
borbon,j/Evans

doumit,r
wigginton,t
evans,n
roberts,r
hermida,j

medders,b
balfour,g
fuentes,b
durbin,c
eyre,s

lincecum,t
haren,d
johnson,j
pineiro,j
bonine,e

Rating:
O Rating -> 8213
P Rating -> 4582
Fielding -> 1450
P+F -> 6032
Overall -> 2181

This is a worse fielding team, hence a better test for your theorum, but actually will hit some. Probably could tweak it for more speed in that park, but that's all the time I had. A 2181 rating has a decent chance of making the playoffs depdning on the division and the league and, of course, the die rolls.
