KD/everyone,

I think that way is a bit more complicated than it needs to be. Let's say you and I agree to a 1 for 1 deal, but we both agree that the guy I'm giving up is slightly more valuable than yours. We could add a swap of my 10th for your 9th round draft pick, to make it an even deal. At that point, though, I wouldn't be able to keep 30 players, since I would have to drop 11 in order for my 10th round pick to exist in order for it to be traded to you. Basically, it makes it harder to trade low draft picks, unless you are planning on dropping more than 10 players.

The way we do it in our other league, which is a bit simpler, is as follows:

You make between 10-15 drops, and get that number of picks, to do with as you like. If it comes to your pick and you have a full 40 man roster, it disappears. If it's your turn to pick in a round and you have less than 40, you make a pick, up to a maximum of 15 rounds. That way, you don't have to worry about trading lower picks earlier in the year, and it also allows trades during the draft. It involves less record keeping, as well, since we wouldn't have to go through everyone's low pick trades to ensure that the picks would exist, and force people to make more drops than they wanted, due to a deal they made last September.

I've been going on the premise that you have to make atleast 10 picks and however many picks you have in the 1st 10 rounds is how many picks you have to make. But I'll go with the majority decision.

Ted - wasn't able to follow your example.

As Rosco pointed out, we are required to "acquire" at least 10 players in the draft (why we drop to 30). We do that by picks or by trade. If you add them by trade your remaining picks are reduced starting from the back round and working forward. So if you have 10 picks, one in each round, then trade for a player you lose your last pick in the last round.

In what is generally known as the "Fowldawg Corollary" this premise applies in all the leagues I'm in - you can't trade picks you don't have. Which means if you trade a 10th round pick you have to drop as many players as necessary to make that pick good. If you drop only 10 players, then pick up an additional pick or player prior to the draft you can't trade your 10th round pick, even if it was good before you made the deal.

That's the reason behind the "the 10th round pick disappears the moment you acquire the 5th round pick." You only get enough picks to fill your roster - you acquire more you have to lose either players or picks to make them good. And you have to do it immediately.

Trading late round draft picks to make deals balanced is simple, but in reality you that's often trading picks that you don't have just to make it easier. It's basically trading a player and nothing for 2 players.
