1969 single team theme league - drafting

Postby franky35 » Tue Mar 15, 2011 11:24 pm

The Trash/Treasure theme league is over (congratulations Rick Smith) and Mashed Taters is finishing up. So, I'm going to try getting interest in a single team theme league where you can pick your favorite team from 1969.

Basically, it will be your one selected team, plus free agents to get to 100 mil team salary.

Here are the rules.

As each owner signs up, they pick a team. Then Divisions are based on total team salaries - top team salaries in the East, lowest in the West. The league will be advanced, 100 mil, no DH, regular waivers. After 12 have signed up, we have a draft here on the board drafting only players that are not on one of the 12 selected teams. Draft in each round is in reverse of team salaries. Round 1: each team in West gets 1 pick. Rounds 2 and 3: each team in West and Central gets 1 pick per round. Rounds 3 and 4: each team gets 1 pick. Draft continues until each team has 100 mil in player salary. Then autodraft only those players on your team or that you drafted. Stadiums are the team stadiums - for example, if you pick the Yankees you also take Yankee Stadium. After the autodraft, waivers and the regular season run as usual.

Here is a partial list of team salaries: Los Angeles Dodgers 60.07; Washington Senators 59.00; Houston Astros 58.11; Chicago Cubs 57.77; Kansas City Royals 54.88; Seattle Pilots 54.25; California Angels 51.81; Chicago White Sox 49.91; Philadelphia Phillies 44.81; Montreal Expos 42.91; Cleveland Indians 41.23; San Diego Padres 38.92

Below is the complete list of team salaries. I went with a $100 mil cap to accomodate the Orioles. If the Orioles aren't taken, then I think that an 80 mil cap might be better - any opinions on that?

BAL $94,160,000
MIN $81,520,000
PIT $76,140,000
NYM $75,630,000
SF $70,150,000
DET $67,520,000
ATL $67,070,000
CIN $66,140,000
STL $65,960,000
NYY $63,610,000
BOS $60,840,000
OAK $60,720,000
LA $60,070,000
WAS $59,000,000
HOU $58,110,000
CHC $57,670,000
KC $54,880,000
SEA $54,250,000
CAL $51,810,000
CHW $49,910,000
PHIL $44,810,000
MON $42,910,000
CLE $41,230,000
SD $38,920,000

The question could be moot since I may take the Orioles. The 1970 series was when I really got interested in baseball, and the O's were just great. Brooks was incredible, and I started calling myself "Frank Robinson" in the neighborhood wiffle ball games - although I was living in Cincinnati at the time.

I like the 100M cap. We have played similar leagues at 60 and 80. The lower priced teams will be stocked with stud free agents.

I was interested to see your drafting rounds rules. I think with the Orioles for example you are so limited with what you can take for free agents that not having a pick in the first two rounds doesn't matter all that much. Assuming you have to keep the core team intact. Or am I missing something? What if you said you had to keep any player from your core team with a salary greater than 1M? In other words, with the more expensive franchises you would have to dance with the girls that brung ya. But then give everyone picks in each round. The O's would pick 12th anyway and would only be able to fit in some FA's under the cap.

Also are players dropped from a selected franchise available as FA's? The Orioles don't have a ton of holes, as we have discussed before. But the Padres and 70K worth of stud FA's might give them a run.

Maybe first division have to keep a minimum of 20 of their franchise roster, second 15 and third 10? Plus the 1M rule?

Just a few ideas. I could easily be missing your primary purpose here, sorry if that's the case.

Powell Muscles Twins

Never forget that dreadful '70 ALCS. The Twins had no chance or hope after a very competetive and interesting game 1. I have scoured the internet for a video copy of the '69 or '70 ALCS, but have never found anything. WOuld LOVE to watch those games!

Yes, after the autodraft is run, the league would operate exactly like a regular league. So, after the autodraft, any available player can be picked up as a free agent.

Regarding the draft structure. Basically, I'm giving the lowest salary teams 3 free agent picks before the elite teams get a pick. I think that is fair - the elite teams should have to wait for their pick. Also, the money for draft picks is 100 mil minus total team salary. For the Twins, that is 100 - 81.52 = 18.48 mil worth of draft picks. For San Diego it is 100 - 38.92 = 61.08 mil.

For the autodraft, you can only pick your team players plus any draft picks. Any players that are not on your autodraft card are free agents.

I think your proposals regarding 1mil players and number of players per franchise put the low cap teams at a disadvantage. There are 20 keepers on the Orioles and Twins; there aren't 10 keepers on the Expos.

But if a significant number of owners want to modify the rules, I'll go along.

I am good with your rules, Franky, was just wondering out loud. So in drafting FA's you can only spend the (100-team payroll) that is the element I was missing. I was worried the Orioles owner for example could still draft Johnny Bench to catch and Dierker to picth, then just drop others like Merv.

Your rule is good - now, let's get some sign-ups!

If we run out of chances I will consider taking a different team if it meant filling at some point down the line.

RJ, just to clarify - I assume that "Oakland" refers to Oakland County. So, you're taking the Tigers. Is that right?
