70s 3B conundrum: Hobson or Reitz?

Postby The Conndor » Thu Mar 17, 2011 5:49 pm

Just drafted, went thru waivers, and I ended up with 2 very different options at 3B: Reitz, who is great D, not much O; and Hobson, who has a lot of power, but no D. As my team doesn't have a ton of pop, I was thinking of starting Hobson, just to see how well he starts out, and using Reitz as a rather expensive defensive sub and fallback option. I imagine people's preferences between the 2 are sometimes based on what stadium, how the rest of the team stacks up, and just plain ol' personal inclination, but any feedback on this choice, and the team in general, would be greatly appreciated;

I don't like either Reitz or Hobson. How about Killebrew at 3B, Oliver at 1B, turn in both Reitz and Hobson in for one sub 1M 3B backup and either use Miller in CF or turn him in for a better one?

I agree with LMB. There seems to be a shortage of 3b in the 70's. Bailey can rock, Melton and Santo have their cards, but you need to chuck the D out the window and go with the Killer at least to start.

I had completely forgotten Killebrew could play 3rd... I picked him up about 5 minutes before I posted this topic, no one had drafted or waiver claimed him. Miller I grabbed as a cheapie 1 in CF, may use the cash to upgrade there. Thanks a million for the input, as always.

Consider budget platoon for 3rd

Postby Larryrickenbacker » Wed Apr 13, 2011 10:11 pm

Howdy,

My only championship team featured a fairly low-budget 3rd base platoon of Wayne Garrett and Dave Chalk in the Astrodome. Garrett had his best card and was effective vs. Righty pitching, while Chalk managed to hit his weight vs. Lefties! We're talking about less than $3 mil for both players. Just wanted to chime in.

1 step ahead of you latorrer, I've had Kennedy since 2nd week of the season after initially using Larry Brown, but thanks for the idea nevertheless. After torrid start, Killer has cooled off a little but still producing well (18 hrs, appr. .265 avg after 72 games), too bad the team isn't doing so hot.
