1969 single team theme league - drafting

Our historical single season sets

play'em as they lie!

Final Ruling:

All trades stand. Salary cap hit follows the player. So, for example, Cubs take the hit for McCovey. Commissioner will only get involved for collusion or if a manager is intentionally trying to throw the league.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. My favorite is Paul's comment [quote:06917d72c7]And I would never ever trade or drop Nate Colbert! He is the face of the 1969-74 Padres.[/quote:06917d72c7]
Bouton wrote that Doug Rader said to Colbert "I think your cute. Not ugly, cute, like an iguana." Colbert still holds the Padres career home run record (163). Tony Gwynn has all the other hitting records.

I personally believe that McCovey for Popovich + Marichal is a good trade for the Pads, and Unser isn't; but I usually have Popovich on my team and never have Unser, so that is probably a matter of taste. I hope the Padres win it all this season. For those who believe the trades are really unfair, they primarily affect the West division. There is no collusion.

I apologize for my comments about Carty and Yaz. I was wrong to make them and am sorry for my role in stirring things up.

I hope everyone sticks with the league.

Let's play ball!

[quote:ad8e28a3fe="LMBombers"] I was about to sign up for the identical 1986 league today but now I'm not sure if the rules are going to changed after it begins.[/quote:ad8e28a3fe]

You don't have to worry about that. I created the '86 League and modeled it after this one...I even used some of the words in the posting of this league to start it!! I, however, after much consideration am NOT allowing trades in the supplemental draft. When you sign up...you have a choice of team AND to vote YES or NO to having the DH in the league. I'm holding off until the 12th pick to choose a team that is left AND am abstaining from the DH vote to make the count uneven and therefore will result in a majority choice.

I feel that if you want to start with "stock" teams you need to create an idea (and means to implement it) to help make less fortunate teams a little more even to their more salary heavy counterparts. So then, all teams are a little more equal (monetarily) BEFORE waivers and free agency starts. For example...let's take the '86 league...if you take the Mets...you have a clear advantage over most EVERY other team with less money. But, throw in another player or two, to make the salaries even...now you have a different ballgame! It's always the "what if" factor that makes Strat fun!! If I take the '86 Cubs, and pick up some free agents, could I actually take the core team and contend?!?

Trades can always be worked out before the season starts. And, I'm sure, some could even be worked out in the "back rooms" even if a league, like the one I created, has NO trades. For example...people can make trades with PM's, which can include players and picks, never showing their hand(s), even telling each other who to draft when the traded picks come up.

My opinion is, I don't like the idea of pre-draft trades, but, for this league to keep allowing the trades as is, ONLY because it was never stated that we weren't allowing trading of picks or drafted players. The question is...how is the cap affected...and...in allowing other "rostered" players to be included in these trades...how does that affect the teams cap and/or available money to reach the $100M pre-draft cap?

I will go along with whatever is decided...I just wanna play coach....

Sorry my $.02 turned into a $1.00!

To clarify, as per the original rules, rostered players don't affect the cap for drafting purposes. Drafted players do affect the cap of the team they end up with. For example, McCovey counts toward the Cubs cap, but not the Padres cap. Adding Popovich does not affect the Padres drafting cap.

I don't want to stir the pot here...but...

So...we're calling Popovich's $2M salary a trading tax for the Cubs???

They lose $2M towards the cap if they originally didn't have Pop...and SD basically gets Pop for free.

So later on down the line that $2M comes into play (good) for SD...not fair for everyone else drafting. I know it's only $2M and I know SD needs help, but, it's in my opinion ALL players traded pre-startup should count toward the $100M cap on the team that they reside. That $2M could equal Wilbur Wood or Ron Taylor. I know we will all eventually have to be at or equal to $100M on our draft card when we start. But, we are starting out on unequal footing. If money (players) is (are) moved around the money (players) should be counted where it (they) sits.

Let's say BAL trades STL (me) Jim Palmer for my 1st (11th) pick. They pick someone to fit under their cap and are basically done drafting. STL (I) on the other hand just picked up Palmer ($4.59M) for free because he doesn't count towards my $100M pre-startup cap and I still have $34.04M left to draft (until I reach $100M). Whereas if I draft a similar player (Sutton $4.62M) he WILL count toward my cap and then I will have $29.42 left to spend. Do you see where I'm goin' with this? There is a distinct advantage to trading "rostered" players. At least for the team receiving them anyway.

Maybe I'm takin' it a little too far...I know we all have to be near $100M on our draft card...but I think the money should be counted where it sits and cap space adjusted...another $.02 from me... :?

Now, someone is complaining that SAN DIEGO is getting an unfair advantage; pwootten is scamming the system and is gaining an unfair advantage. That is progress!!!

The original rules said that trades won't affect the cap and we'll stick with that. McCovey counts against the Cubs' cap but Popovich doesn't count against the Pads' cap. That's the rule we're playing with.

If you think that trading for Palmer will help your team by giving you more cap space, then go ahead and trade for Palmer. The flaw in your scheme is that you think you're going to get Palmer for free. I doubt Baltimore is going along with that.

Whoa big fella!

It was just an example and a thought on my part, NOT a complaint. I'm just bringing to light what COULD happen...I didn't say SD was scamming anyone...I'm just sayin' it opens the door for people to be a part of a trade that clearly benefits one party out of 12. If my thought process is wrong...so be it...I'm just showing you a way that I'm thinking...not complaining or stating anything.

And...I really can't find anywhere in YOUR original post that even mentions the word "trade" let alone rules for "trades"...why do you think people were in an uproar over the trades??? Because it was NOT in the ORIGINAL post (rules)...so there was NO clear rule on how to deal with them....

If my example were fact...and I did trade Palmer for the pick, I would, in effect be getting Palmer and NOT being charged toward the pre-setup $100M cap. Therefore, it is free (no charge!), in relation to the pre-setup draft. But...if you watch over the trades, like you said you would, to make sure it's good for the game...then...we shouldn't have a problem (I don't think most people would want to waste $25)...and the league will be fun! :D

If people don't agree with my point, that's ok...I just wanted to put it out there to see what people thought. Nothing gets settled if we don't talk and have opinions....

Good luck to ALL and let's draft!!!
