I don't understand what this means.

And I don't get the part about "unfair" and "4 mil in cap saved." The same rules apply to everyone - I think that is, by definition, fair. The trade helps both teams - Cubs save on cap and Pads get a better 2nd baseman who can't get injured.

Millan is 3.5 mil, not 4. Also, the original trade was McCovey (13.35 mil) = third overall (Jones selected, 9.7 mi) + Popovich. Now it is McCovey (13.35) = Jones (9.7 mil) + Millan (3.5 mil). So, the net trade is essentially cap neutral. Also, San Diego can't use both McCovey and Colbert and I'll bet San Diego hasn't received a ton of offers for Colbert. Hegan hasn't even been drafted, so I'm guessing there is very little demand for a player like Colbert.

meaning

When the trade was effectively Mccovey and almost 4 million in cap for Cleon Jones and Popovich it was very unfair. After you changed rule it helped address it.

Phew! Thanks. I'm glad the rule is viewed as increasing fairness.

I'm trying to make this league fair and fun for all owners. So, I'm sorry if some owners think something is unfair - but I'm trying!

Gordie- I almost took Woody - who are you going to sit to get him AB's? Brooks, Frank, Davey Johnson, Buford, Belanger? Or maybe can Blair and let him play CF? :P

Capology 101

Postby franky35 » Thu Mar 24, 2011 3:32 pm

Only drafted players count against the cap. For example, in the Epstein/Yaz trade, neither player was drafted, so there is no affect on the cap. And the cap hit follows the drafted player if he is traded. So, if McCovey is traded, the team receiving McCovey takes a 13.35 mil cap hit - this is what happened when the Cubs acquired McCovey. Popovich was not drafted so, like Yaz, he doesn't count against the cap.

[b:f9e39bdde0]The rule is simple: Any drafted player counts against the team that owns the drafted player. Undrafted players don't affect the cap.[/b:f9e39bdde0]

Once the draft is finished and the autodraft is run, the normal SOM rules apply.

So....

Postby caimrisek » Thu Mar 24, 2011 5:11 pm

Franky...(just using McCovey and hence, your name as an example-NOTHING PERSONAL!) if we were to agree on a trade of:

you sending me McCovey

for

me sending you Gibson and a pick...

Do you REALLY think that would be fair??!!??

You would be getting a $10M+pitcher with no consequence to the pre-draft cap hit...AND...you would still have a ton of money (over $30M!) to either draft another starter, replacement OF'er AND upgrade to your RP's!!! And...with the extra $10M you can now spend (pre-draft) you could, in effect, keep taking players that other teams, like SD, would draft to fill their roster.

Would this happen...probably NOT...but...with the way the rules are setup it COULD! This is what I think is not fair...and this is why I will NOT participate in pre-draft trading.

Do I think you thought of this? No. Do I think you did this on purpose to exploit the rules? No. I'm just sayin' it COULD be done. It's just a muddy middle ground here that I think the only way to stay clean is to count the money where it sits....

Sorry...the horse moved....

Anyway...I'm thankful you started this league and I can't wait for it to start...we're not gonna change the rules now so it really doesn't matter....

To Gfdwarf

Gfdwarf - Added value at that price and on my limited budget, plus now no one else can use him against me. I expect he'll play in homer ball parks against righties at 3B, pinch hit a lot and be an injury replacement for almost any position. Not bad for under $2mm.
