Best Start Ever - 2010 League - 41-10

A 2010 team managed by the Biomechanical Man is off to a 41-10 start. The team is first in pitching and hitting.

Is it luck or skill?

Most amazing thing: he's 41-10--yet has seven blown saves, including four by Hong-Chih Kuo who is likely the best reliever in the 2010 set! This looks like a super solid team getting good performances out of just about everyone. It will undoubtedly cool off, this team is 10-4 in one run games, which is pretty darn lucky. But I don't think I would be going too much out on a limb to say it's likely make the playoffs. :)

The BioMechanicalMan is "the man" when it comes to strato, so I would say he put together a great team, but it's good to be lucky too. He seems like a great guy as well.

Thanks for the kind words, apolivka. I thought this would be a good team too, but I am also amazed at the team's success so far especially amazing considering that it is a private league with skilled, seasoned strat veterans.

As far as Kuo goes, I am pleased with his performance so far. True, he has 4 blown saves, but he has pitched in more than half of my games (28/51) and has had a W or SV in about half of my victories so far (20/41).

While my team is getting lucky breaks, I think the thing that is helping with the wins is good settings. The pitchers and hitters are getting in the right situations and my settings seem to be helping HAL make good decisions. I'm excited to see how well this team can do in the long-run.

Bio - Grats on your super start! As a TSN strat rookie, can you share what settings you are using please? In addition, how on earth have you gotten 10 HR's from David Wright at home in Miller Park, not to mention that as a 5L he is hitting .340+ vs RH pitching?

[quote:e538b2a216="ShakeyBoomer"]As a TSN strat rookie, can you share what settings you are using please?[/quote:e538b2a216]I did a lot of individual settings for the hitters, turning off stealing, bunting, and H&R for those who shouldn't do that. I've set Kuo as setup and closer, and then Casilla as setup and closer. The order (piority) of the pitcher settings is important. I've set Braddock and Sweeney as L/R specialists, although that is not working too well.

However I put Wright (5L) in the middle of a lineup of lefty sluggers, which may be helping his opportunities. Also, while Miller is a slugfest for lefties, it is fairly average for RH power (HR 1-8). It's not like Wright is doing this in a homerun-free ballpark. Espinosa and Colvin have also been good fits as spare pieces. Espinosa has power when he bats lefthanded and has played stellar defense; his OBP stinks, but you can't have everything for the price.

What do you mean by priority of the settings please?

I believe this means: You have 2 setting for all RP. You can set closer #1 and closer #2. Make sure that the one you want in there the most innings is set as closer above anyone else you set as closer.

Closer Kuo
Closer Casilla

Set Up Kuo
Set Up Casilla

This will always put Kuo in before Casilla unless Kuo has pitched too much and needs rest. If you put Casilla on top HAL will pick him before Kuo.

Oh and yes what a start. I see these threads and get excited to see if I have any of these players on my team. I do I have the 2B and LH sp. No this does not make me fell better about my 2 teams. This team has more HR's than both my teams combined. "When you can snatch the pebble from my hand than you can go Grasshopper" DANG IT!

I am still looking for an answer to my original question. Is this the best start ever in any type of Strat on line league? He is now 43-11. Here is his record:

19-5 Home
24-6 Away
18-5 Lefties
25-6 Righties

His team has scored 332 runs and is on its way to a 1000 run season.

Your original question was "Is it luck or skill?".

Seems to be both...he has the skill to know what elements would make a successful team, and the luck of being able to obtain them (which may also be a reflection of the skill in strategically constructing his draft card).

Of course, like any game of probability, there's always an element of luck if you beat the odds of the dice...

Exactly what chasenally explained.

It is by far the best start I've ever had. I'm hoping it's the best finish too. :)
