An update

Also, it doesn't help when the main games page doesn't update the SOM section since 2009....

The price point is the primary disincentive. I have to imagine that anyone who wants to maintain the current price point is a troll.

I buy a five pack, and I'll play through that over the course of a year or year and a half.

If teams were $10 a pop, I might play 2 at a time. I'd certainly, over the year or year and a half, play more teams (probably 2X more) than I do now -- that's a break even for TSN/SOM, except that they'll likely have more players. TSN/SOM need to find out the balance between price and sales -- plain and simple. I'm skeptical that $25 (or $20 at a five pack) is the best way to maximize revenue.

As for marketing, well, we can't even get a link on the TSN homepage. That's everything you need to know.

There is one main issue that I think is getting overlooked.
Yes, lower prices will likely bring in more players, and will generate more teams. However, more teams means more leagues. That sounds like a good thing, because it should be bringing in more money, but more leagues also means more traffic and a heavier load on the server. The cost to maintain the servers with more teams will likely go up, and the increased revenue might not cover the cost increase due to prices being slashed.

There are many folks here who think the server is already unreliable. More traffic, with the inability to cover rising costs to run the server will only make things worse.

Thoughts?

I agree with you voovits. elsenorbeavis would play more teams but not spend a dime more than he already does. If everyone else does the same that does not help TSN at all and a price reduction would not help. I still think it is all about marketing and finding those people that would play but just are not aware that TSN/SOM even exists. That is where more income will be found for them.

Even if they do spend more, the more they pay still may not cover the rising cost to maintain the servers.

Then why not double the price of a five-pack to $200? They'll make just as much in revenue and cut the server load in half?

But that's not what would happen. Most of us would dry up and blow away.

People are not going to base their spending here solely upon a fixed dollar amount. The amount is actually quite variable with one's perception of value in correlation with their spending abilities driving the purchasing. If I don't see much value at a particular price point than I'm not going to buy it. Period. If I see value, I will.

If the price were lower I would spend more here because I'd see it as a better value for my entertainment dollar. As it is I think the price is too high and as my entertainment budget is reduced these days, I'm now spending more of that money elsewhere.

Well don't spend it going to the movies with your lady because that $20 is gone in 1½ hours (not counting dinner, popcorn or whatever). On the other hand that $20 gets you a team here for 8 weeks.

Highway robbery I tell ya.

I agree with LMBombers. I get way more action in the sack when I sweep a 3 game series than I ever have taking the little woman to a movie. It is true. We don't go to the movies and every 3 weeks or so I sweep a series.

all depends on your point of view.

There are TONS of different types of online games. WOW for $20 a month you can be playing 24/7. Here for that $20 I spend, what 5-10 minutes per team after the season starts? If I really go through the boxscores, I sped maybe 30 minutes max?

It's not even the same.

Heck with WoW, I get to play starcraft 2 all I want for a one time fee of $whateverthegamecosttobuy. I got more than my moneys worth out of that!

For the record, I would support a price drop, I just tried to bring up a point that possibly nobody thought of.
