Defense at SS

Defense at SS

Postby rvalente01 » Tue May 10, 2011 5:34 pm

I would like opinions on defense at SS. I'm in a 2010 league with my stadium being McAfee Coliseum. I currently have Stephen Drew at SS but he is not hitting a lick and can't afford $6.75M of dead money. My SS options in the FA market are either lousy hitters or lousy fielding. Is there really a difference between a 2 E25 vs. a 3 E10? It seems all the passable hitters are 3 range players and the 2's can't hit. Cutting Drew will free up cash to help other weak hitting positions. My pitching staff tends to be K and fly ball outs oriented cards so chances may not overly plentiful.

Thanks in advance

John McDonald, Adam Everett , Alex Gonzalez, Alcides Escobar are only 2 with low injury factor.

3s are Eduardo Nunez and Edgar Renteria though he is a 4 injury

Wilson Valdez is on my roster but not sure i trust his bat.

Every pitcher has exactly the same chance for a Groundball SS X. Seven chances out of 216 (or out of 108 if you only consider the pitcher's card).

Count the chances yourself:

2,12 = 1 chance
3,11 = 2 chances
4,10 = 3 chances
5,9 = 4 chances
6,8 = 5 chances
7 = 6 chances

Getting nervous about Drew..

Howdy,

[i:920e01ad76]I[/i:920e01ad76] just drafted Drew, Rvalente! His card was proved just too tempting. Hope I have better luck with Drew in Arlington Stadium-a "bomber" park.

Your SS does not need to hit but he sure the heck needs to field. Your Catcher can hit but he sure the heck needs to block the ball and keep the other team from stealing. Someone from Cf or RF doesn't need to hit but he needs to keep the other team from running the bases. You do NEED atleast 2 players that can hit the crap out of the ball. Cano, nice card but do you really want to build a team around a 2b. Joe Morgan rocked but who picks him to build around. I wouldn't take Cano in the 3rd round but that won't ever be a problem this year as he won't get past the first round.
I will note that I have never spent much on catchers ever and this year they have hit better than most of my high priced players.
Best player this year, I don't know yet but I am watching 2 players under 3MIL that are smashing the ball. There are many players out there that are as good or better then those that you spend 4-6Mil more on.
This is a very tricky year for player cards. Mostly because I put what I thought was a very strong team that fought hard to lose 100 games. They lost 96 and that team was very good until the season started. I built that team like I have built most of my good teams and they took a crap all year long.

I understand the chances but I'm tied for the league lead in Ks and have the second fewest assists in the fielding metric so I took that to mean more K and fly ball outs. I also have 3rd fewest GDP.
