Defense at SS

Thanks for all the advice. I'm going to give Alex Gonzalez a shot. The extra cash from Drew will help me revamp my entire OF.

Catcher is another poisition that is weak but my theory there has always been to go with the defense since good hitting catchers seem to cost too much and you can get better production with less injury risk at another position for same money.

I have been getting pretty good production out of Drew. Here are his key stats after 75 games:

BA. .271
OB. .356
SLG. .426
HR. 7
SB. 13

And he plays pretty good defense and rarely gets hurt. But this is just my experience with him.

I do not doubt that a a SS with a 2 e25 is not all that much better than a 3 e10. But I would still rather have a 2 e25 and .020 less points of slugging percentage, over a 3 e10.

Stephen Drew seems to be having a lot of sub par seasons for many GMs here, but for me he is doing just fine offensively, and his 2 e12 is much much better than a 3 e10.

I have to agree with RMilter regarding using Drew. Gonzalez is a poor choice for McAfee just because he will lose much of his power stroke to the park and his power is what makes him so appealing. IMO Gonzalez is much more likely to disappoint in McAfee than Drew. Drew could also be bad, but Gonzalez will be bad. It's one of those choices I see when I look at some teams and I wonder what the person could have been thinking to use that player in those circumstances, as it seems so obvious they should have went in another direction.

You know sometimes the situation may call for you to roster a less than ideal player for your team. I don't agree that you never play Gonzalez in a park just because it's not a great fit. I have had him in Miller, for example, and it worked nicely. Granted, it needs to be a good fit. Say I need a RH hitter (in my LU) to keep from having three LH hitters hitting in a row. Maybe two or three parks in the rest of your Division are righty-slanted. Maybe he's the only two range available and you really need a two because you already have a three 2B. Sometimes you need a creative mind when filling out your roster.

You are right that all of us end up with some less than ideal choices or use a player because of other reasons you mention. IMO, low opb, low BA, power hitting players rarely excel in a pitching park enviroment. I have never used Gonzalez, but I actually like him and will definately use him in the future. My worry would be that if he had a good season in a HR park he might hit 30 HR, but he would still have a pretty low obp and BA. I just randomly(honest) pulled these stats for him from the first completed leagues of mine I checked:

It is somewhat close(or less) to what I would expect and I would be happy with that, but if you even reduce his HR's by 1/3, he would be pretty bad and I think you would have better options. I'm sure the options are limited but IMO there must be better options, whether it involves using a "3" rated player, changing something else to get another ss, changing another player or changing no one. I don't think Gonzo at SS is the answer to his problems in a pitching park.
