Who would you pick if you were going second in a live draft?

I'm going to be participating in my first live draft on Friday. Luckily, I'll be picking second. The problem is who to choose. I'm assuming Hamilton will be the first pick. So my choices boil down to Votto, Pujols or Carlos Gonzalez. For some reason, I'm sort of leaning toward Gonzalez. (However, something seems wrong when you're passing up Pujols.) Am I crazy? Who would you choose and why? I'll probably going with a hitters park.

Tough choices indeed.

What I do is construct a list of potential players I like at each position.
See which positions are "stronger" for my needs.

ie. 1B- Has Votto, Pujols, Miggy, Morneau, Konerko, AGonz.

If u don't take Albert, there's a chance Konerko will be there.

Then I think there's more RHSP's than LHSP's so a really good lefty bat is slightly more valuable to me than a righty. (Hamilton)

Thirdly, there's another thing I do in a live draft with players. How many positions are "covered" by my pick? ie. CarGo covers ALL positions in the OF, so in case it's your turn to draft again, u have some flexibility in positions moving him around.

Hope it helps...

I definitely think CarGo is the way to go (if Hamilton is taken). The position flexibility really seals the deal with him. If CarGo is the top pick, however, Hamilton is a solid #2 choice.

The SP's seem to be left on the board for awhile. Hamilton is gold but Votto has had mixed results. He is not very good for me in Miller and I know someone else who is looking to drop him.

I believe it will go Cano then you will have a chance at Hamilton.

Plus Cano passes the magical injury nexus: he'll start in all 162 games. I've seen Hamilton dropped in 3 of the 8 leagues I'm in, and not by n00b managers. Rather an expensive property to have rehabbing at any point during the season.

And yeah, the dropoff, cuz Pedroia doesn't count, is massive.

Flaxen, your whole argument is moot because this is a live draft league where salary caps are irrelevant. Even if someone is injured, you can have a relatively expensive backup.

I would think drafting Pedroia is still risky in live drafts, you will either have to spend two fairly high picks on 2B's or draft Pedroia and a low ranked backup and go with the backup starting when Pedroia gets hurt. If you got lucky you might be able to get a decent backup on waivers but that's definetely not a sure thing.

If you had someone like Prado or Infante at another position Pedroia might be ok. Of course if Pedroia drops far in the draft he wouldn't be as risky.

Well if I had the first pick I would pass on Hamilton and take Cano. I also like CarGo better than either Hamilton or Pujols.
