Observations on the 2010 set

Some facts and [u:4d1b1bb943]opinions[/u:4d1b1bb943] with regards to the 2010 set.

1. Lots of higher injury players. High risk=high reward. As usual, have a good backup plan when they go down.

2. There's a big drop off after the top guys at each position get drafted. Better to grab one early than miss out.

3. As with previous sets, on base % (OBP) is at a premium. Those top of the lineup guys have even less OB, and there are less of them. Especially guys with 600 or > PA's.

4. I've lowered my own goals with this set because of it's limitations. In previous sets, I've tried to get the top of the lineup guys with 43-45 OB chances. Now, 40+ OB chances is my goal, when I lose out.

5. While I like the offensive teams in the past, I've been strong with my pitching this set. I don't think I've changed my game plan for building a squad, I think this sets limitations have made it possible to have a good pitching team.

6. Lot's of slanted guys means platoons. I like to have 1 on each team. This set seems to dictate 2 per team for me.

I'll add more as it comes to me...

My 2 cents,

Well you're off to a good start...I agree with all your points.

One other thing I'd add - having 2's or better up the middle not quite as common, or easy - their doesn't seem to be as many of overall quality (meaning decent offense), and the big offensive guys (with a few exceptions) seem to be 3's or worse.

Absolutely keyzick.

7. Lots of over-priced guys as well as under-performers in my opinion.
ie. I've tried Huff 2X. Not enough hit chances or power for the $.
Rolen has done nothing for me. Alot of $ for the D.
Never tried him but Ross @ over $7 million?
Langerhans @ $3.34 is a joke, as is Dan Johnson @ $4.20.

[i:7ec49b7ece]I do realize these thoughts have to be based upon each set RATHER than previous sets...[/i:7ec49b7ece]

I have him in McAfee and here is what he is doing so far after 138 games:

475 62 108 55 8 2 42 104 116 0 0 4 .227 .367 .390

A strange line, I concede.

I didn't like him until this season:

Socal-

your right on with your points. On base percentage is king! I have had good success with value pitchers that have performed very well pairing them with high risk/high reward injury cards...

In the 2009 game, I had success with Kauffman type teams with OBP, Speed, Defense, Pitching. In the 2010 game, this is a recipe for disaster. I've tried my old formula 3 times without success. The pitching is so good, that you can't play the merry-go-round strategy. I've had guys stuck on base right and left. One team's batting average was .276 (25 pts higher than league avg) and ended up last in scoring.
I've been gravitating more and more to slugging teams and starting to find more success. I'm finding I have to slug my way to prosperity. I'm calling it the "Mike Tyson Theory". Just watch your ears and any of your female relatives. The Mike Tyson Theory may not be pretty. It can be effective until I become hated and broke!

the 2010 card set is far and away my favorite year of any of the post 200 sets to date. Salaries, player pool, weird options, unique platoons---2010 has it all.
