The unbearable lightness of trading...

LOL- Love that one Nev...

here is one that I got last night from a new league we are both in-
Not to say Mauer isnt good- but I just had a season where he hit .250 with few HRs while only facing righties.

You give up:
Hershiser, Orel (1985) ($8,750,000)
Cobb, Ty (1912) ($9,550,000)
Trammell, Alan (1987) ($8,240,000)
Dandridge, Ray (NeL) ($5,580,000)
Torriente, Cristobal (NeL) ($8,080,000)

Other team gives up:
Mauer, Joe (2009) ($9,530,000)
Salmon, Tim (1995) ($8,510,000)
Gordon, Joe (1939) ($6,430,000)
Rizzuto, Phil (1950) ($8,460,000)
Rusie, Amos (1897) ($8,130,000)

I got a trade offer in that same league asking for Mauer in exchange for Fisk and Hershiser. Problem was Hershiser would have been my #6 starter in a 4 man rotation.

In another offer same person actually expected me to give him Josh Gibson and Joe Gordon for Norm Cash, Carlton Fisk, and Lajoie. Fisk would have been nothing but an expensive backup on my team. The only player coming my way who would have started given my roster makeup at the time was Lajoie, and he is vulnerable to 15 game injury.

Another offer received in that league was offering Lajoie and Palm (again someone only good as a backup and not a good one for Josh) in exchange for in my opinion the second best catcher in the set.

This is what I mean by trade value being in the eye of the beholder. I am sure the person who was trying to get me to give up Mauer or Josh honestly thought he was making fair offers. But they were just as bad or worse in my opinion than the one you make fun of.

One side effect (intended or not) of this thread might be that people quit sending trade offers at all to some people.

Which begs the question why you made so many offers for a player you consider sub-par?

I try to make fair offers always that have some value to both teams. Occasionally I send an unbalanced offer in response to one or more one sided offers to make a point. Though I admit sometimes that point gets missed.

[quote:70a6e12b53]I just got a recent one, Mike Schmidt and Ken Griffey Jr in a trade for Mickey Mantle. I kept Mantle but it made me think. I also have G Brett at 3b. [/quote:70a6e12b53]
For the record I did not make the above referenced trade offer but....

Interesting, on some of my teams I would have accepted that offer. I like platooning Brett with Schmidt. Huge offensive potential and Schmidt provides some insurance against the 15 game injury risk expensive Brett brings to the table. And I could live with Griffey in CF. Plus I am getting 19 mil in value for 13 mil. Not always proof of a good deal, but hardly someone trying to take advantage.

You say I am crazy for saying I would accept this deal and platoon Brett and Schmidt. No way that combination could ever result in a winning team, right?

25 games over .500 and on pace for 100 wins. There is not that much difference between Griffey and Cedeno. But if someone offered me the reverse of the above trade, Mantle for Cedeno and Schmidt I turn it down.

Again as I have said before the goodness, badness, or lightness of a trade is in the eyes of the beholder and can only truly be interpreted in context of salary cap, ballpark and roster makeup. I probably do not consider such an expensive platoon at 140 mil but in 200 mil I not only consider doing it I did and quite happy with results.

I think part of the problem with how we view trade offers is we think we know it all and many expect to always come out ahead. An even trade that makes both teams better is unacceptable for some and that is a shame. It is in my opinion more of a factor in the difficulty in making trades than any other issue including fitting the swapped players under the salary cap.

What about that says Mauer is sub-par????
I'm contending hes inconsistent NOT sub-par- Ill agree, he 'might' be the second best C in the set depending on ballpark...

8-)
and now that I looked back...

PS- I believe the actual offers were either Fisk and Nap for Mauer or
Spoony and E. Collins for Mauer...both very reasonable.

If not sub-par and indeed the second best catcher in the set then his trade value should be high, not low. :D

I dont mind starting a separate thread discussing the relative value of Nap, Mauer, Orel, Fisk etc.

Suffice it to say, the offers I posted were done so because I thought they fit well for what the topic was- and IMO didnt leave a ton of room for doubt on which way they slanted.

and as an aside: If one is concerned that Nap is a 15 game injury risk-
so are both Gibson and Mauer.

But once either Gibson or Mauer get injured the other one is bulletproof.
You know that.

Understood, but in my opinion no worse than the offers you sent. Whatever, I promise not to send any more offers.
