Good trades

I have to agree with nev on the assessment of these trades. There were some very one-sided deals in the above posts.

It's all about context. Context of the team needs; context of the division; context of the manager's preferences for certain players. And we can end up valuing players and deals differently. A particular "thing" for me are the two-for-one deals, that can suck in a newbie very easily into giving up a stud player for a couple of mediocre players.

But, some basically good trades can still look like bad trades to some of us. And vicer-verca. Such is life, eh?

Is this mainly an issue for higher cap leagues? And for leagues with guys you don't know so well?

I find these two threads on trades to be quite interesting. It is my job to try to make my team better. I should try to find trades that improve my roster and win more games. It is not really my job to make sure that the other guy is also making his team better. That being said - I do not try to trick anybody else. In fact I often look for teams to trade with where both can benefit - thinking that is the best use of my time - in finding trades that will be accepted, not declined.

If you do not like a trade - then hit decline and move on. Ripping into someone just because they are trying to improve their team is rude - tell them kindly why the trade will not help you, if you must. I would also not feel terribly guilty if someone accepts a trade they shouldn't - I have enough trouble trying to make my team competitive - much less trying to worry about the competitiveness of the other 11. They will learn over time - I have learned plenty in this game by making mistakes. It is just a game.

When I hear of someone ripping into someone else about a trade they didn't like I wonder if they would do the same if they met them or knew them face to face. Sometimes sitting behind a computer people say things they probably wouldn't do face to face. Let's just all be cordial. I think the number of trades would probably pick up if the negative thought that surrounds it for some would disappear.

[quote:1005255bfb]3 of the 5 trades were bad for one of the parties, one was just awful (imo) but what do I know. lol

btw Valen would you "ever" give up Pete for Yaz and Manning?[/quote:1005255bfb]
Yes, I would if I felt I could spare Pete and needed a LH LFer. Plus Manning is one of my favorite pitchers. So definitely if the needs were reversed I would not hesitate to do the reverse trade.

[quote:a52fa0408a]I still think it should remain anonymous as different folks are gonna have different takes on trades that are 'good'.
[/quote:a52fa0408a]
Understood but do not think it needs to be anonymous since nobody will be posting in this to make fun of someone. In fact the thread specifically says post trades that you think are good and it should go without saying the managers are getting a compliment. Anonymous is only needed when trying to hide something.

The fact some may not view all these trades as good only emphasizes the point made many times by me and others that a trade often has to be evaluated within the context of the league and relevant rosters, etc.

[quote:0dbd42262d]all i get here is that you trade a lot!
[/quote:0dbd42262d]
I posted trades I made because it was easy to go back to the last 3 or 4 leagues and pull the trades from my team's messages. I cannot look at other team's messages or see trades in the transactions list unless they happen to be within the last 100 transactions. And since just swapping a player's years takes up 2 transactions trades disappear off the transactions list very quickly. So depending on others to post their trades which they felt helped both teams.

As trades occur in the future by other teams and I notice them they may get posted. Though I often do not look at trades closely that are made by other teams.

[quote:41600bf39e]I also recently traded Matt Williams and Albert Pujols for Tris Speaker in a keeper league. This was before the actual live draft to complete our rosters.Changing team philosophy from slugging to small ball (80m cap league) [/quote:41600bf39e]
An excellent example of having good players that do not fit your philosophy for that team for something that does. Looks like both teams got got something they wanted/needed. That to me is what makes a trade good.

waldenhd makes some good points but the question then could be asked...

[quote:b54c9775d9]I wonder if they would do the same if they met them or knew them face to face[/quote:b54c9775d9]

[b:b54c9775d9]I wonder how many of these offers would be sent out in the first place if we were face to face[/b:b54c9775d9]...***Important*** Because I think not many, and that's what makes me wanna call em out...You send crap out you get crap back.

[quote:b54c9775d9] I do not try to trick anybody else. In fact I often look for teams to trade with where both can benefit - thinking that is the best use of my time - in finding trades that will be accepted, not declined.

Great stuff there.

Well maybe. Some will get taken in a terrible deal or two and never play again because of it.

Many get burned and have long memories and a strong desire to not get burned again so they become very reluctant to trade.... or worse yet they start sending lopsided deals themselves...

Lopsided offers lead to lopsided deals...which leads to more lopsided offers.

I've sent replies as harmless as "Really" and "No way Jose"...that have brought scathing replies from some (Salt and Petro...Rivs and a few others can tell you about ZakT)...I mean it is just a game and whatever became of "sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me"....

btw the fact that it''s "just a game" is what puzzles and bothers me most at this type behavior (lop sided offers).

I mean I understand the guy that knowingly writes a bad rent check because he needs a few days to get his funds together instead of getting evicted, way more than someone that plays this game like it's real life War.

I do agree that most of the lop-sided trade offers would never occur at all if it were face to face - being able to hide behind a computer screen can make it possible for folks to do things that would not garner much respect if done face to face.

I also suspect that the folks that get burned by a bad trade or two and never play again were not long for the game anyway.

I have started to send a short message with trade offers and responses letting folks know what I am thinking. They may not agree with me, but it makes the game a bit more enjoyable for me and may help limit the number of "mean" responses I have received (only 2 that I recall in 64 teams played - and 1 apologized when I asked why the angry tone to their response).
