Good trades

Postby DOUGELKE » Wed Jul 20, 2011 5:08 pm

This person keeps offering trades that are always one sided in his favor. He offers me his worst pitcher with a bad ERA for my best pitcher,or his worst outfielder batting under 200 for my best outfielder hitting over 300.Also I'm in first place with a 12 game lead. Usually when I'm in 1st place, I leave well enough alone

We have had some interesting discussions about trades here. But nothing I have seen here on the boards rivals some of the trade suggestions I hear in the media. On ESPN radio today they were saying Rangers should make an offer for Clayton Kershaw. Not a bad idea considering his 2.72 ERA until you look closer.

Why would Dodgers want to trade a young quality pitcher like him?
Rotation has not been a problem for Rangers and they are currently in a 2 week period of near dominance.
The final straw was Steve Dennis saying he would give up Holland or even better CJ plus Martin Perez our top pitching prospect who has reached AAA as the youngest player at that level, toss in Angel Beltre, a highly touted OFer, Chris Davis who is producing almost a HR every other game at AAA and is one of best defensive first basemen I have seen and can play third and corner OF. But in addition to those 4 he would also toss in whatever other top prospect Dodgers wanted.

I wonder how many of the trades here are inspired by listening to such things in real life.

LMAO! Do you suppose Steve Dennis plays SOM?

Fortunately for the Rangers, that wasn't Nolan Ryan talking.

Okay, I am having an issue dealing with this- perhaps those of you on the positive tip can tell me how I should handle this.
...and its not the offer itself which bothers me, its the misdirection in the blurb that follows.

You give up:
Collins, Eddie (1914)
McLain, Denny (1968)
Youngs, Ross (1920)

Other team gives up:
Fox, Nellie (1959)
Jackson, Reggie (1969)
Marichal, Juan (1965)

"Marichal fits your park much better than McLain with 0 bpHRs vs. lefties instead of 4. Doby hasn't done much all year, and Jackson would give you a serious power threat in RF. Fox plays great defense at 2B, the most important trait for middle infielders, runs well, and has a very high positive clutch rating."

PS- I responded honestly, but Im sure I didn't handle it in the best way.
So, would like some advice.
Oh, and my team happens to be leading by a 8 games in this case, so its not like I need to make a change.

I'm in Dunn.
...and I have Doby currently playing CF vs. R.- Ross is a PH vs right.

See, those of us that have played, and I hope Im not letting out a big secret here, know that Reggie is well, generally horrible in Live, even in a lefty power stadium.
Hes hitting .180 on his current team.

But to me the offer itself is fine; its the narrative.
See N- if you and I discuss a trade, and Im often times wrong on stuff, at least its a discussion-
and doesn't imply that I'm completely clueless as to what factors to take into account in a trade:
Just as an example- did this person have any idea that I have 3 other stadiums in my division with relatively low lefty HRs- and thats why I like Mclain? If it was a discussion, this wouldnt be an issue.

PS- I've noticed you not using your car much; wanna buy a veteran donkey? It runs on grass, has soft fur and likes carrots. Hardly ever neighs.

I hear ya....I could pick apart what he said, especially about Fox and Marichal but the thing is he might really be shootin ya straight as far as his experience goes...If that's the case I love breakdowns like that....No harm no foul...He means well.

However if he's sellin ya a bill of goods, or trying to, while I understand it's his right to do blah blah blah and it's just negotiating blah blah blah, then I think that type of stuff should be checked at the door...Just my 2 pennies.

I am in agreement 110% on this.

Would not have gone this far- had I already not explained to this manager on multiple occasions that I felt he was targeting newer managers with this stuff- and that they, who aren't experienced wouldn't understand the misdirection;
its not simply sending an offer and me clicking yes/no-

Although I was ticked off- I did post this to have V and others tell me how they might have handled it better than I managed to...so please do.

I tend to assume unless past history really proves otherwise people are sincere. The offer looks relatively even, probably because I have had good luck with Jackson. On the surface though it appears to be small ball (Collins,Youngs) for power.

To me combined with the fact his narrative discussed a player (Doby) who was not even in the trade this is just a springboard for a philisophical discussion. I probably misspelled that. Typing that work with this font makes my eyes go cross. It would also be a springboard for a discussion on the relative merits of McLain.

His narrative not matching with his offer makes me wonder if he got careless when clicking and meant to ask for Doby or got confused and meant to reference Youngs in his narative. A calm discussion even if not leading to a trade lets you know which player he actually values. Perhaps in a different team with different roster needs you might be willing to part with the player he likes. And knowing he likes that player might help you get something you otherwise might not be able to talk him out of.

There has been a few times when offered one of my favorite players I immediately accepted the trade. And even though the accepted trade was even if the other person had realized he was offering up an emotional favorite could have got more out of me. In other words there are certain players (not to be named  ) who I will overpay for.

My experience is this. Treat such things as sincere and discuss respectfully and either he or you or both learn something. If nothing else you learn something about how he thinks which is useful information next time you are considering trading with the guy. Trying to discern the motives of another is a risky proposition.

Saying what you said here about the 3 other parks and why that makes McLain more valuable to you would have been a good response. Good chance he did not put that much thought in to it. Heck, I am bad about not paying enough attention to the parks in my own division. Nev pointed that out to me once upon a time. He was right but don't tell him I said that. So you can imagine how much attention I pay to the ones in your division. I get more than 4 teams going at once and I forget what park I play in.

Perhaps he was trying to work a Collins for Jackson deal and the rest was just to balance positions and $ values. In that case give him a little credit for paying lip service to not leaving your lineup with gaping holes.

Bottom line: Not something you would accept given your circumstances but not so outlandish it warrants a negative response of any kind.

V-
I do hear ya- like Im saying, its not the offer itself that bothered me-

I know I've sent ones that are Im sure percieved in a worse way.
its the narrative that bugs me- because it got used on me when I first started playing- and I mentioned to this person that I didnt appreciate it then- 3 years ago, and since.

Guess it just got to me this morning-...and perhaps because another manager mentioned to me yesterday how much he detests it as well.

but am glad to have a different point of view-
thanks.
