full disclosure: I am a life long Yankee fan

Strat has succeeded in demonstrating what true life never quite could: Jeter is way overrated. That translates into POOR value in Strat.

I agree. I have drafted him a few times and "poor value" sums it up nicely.
Drafted him in a live uncapped league in Forbes 09. Used him only vs right handers and a late def replacement vs lefties. He responded with .259 AVE .325 OBP AND .384 SLUG.

A really nice season from Jeter in Hilltop.

Jeter in an even rated park hit .352 for me with 148 runs.. For you non Yankee fans.... tough to be over rated with 5 rings, one of the all time great plays in post season (the flip vs. oakand) except for last two seasons in older age... a consisitent over .300 hitter and very consistent defense, and an excellent base runner, who very rarely makes a mistake on the base paths...something that a whole lot of present day players have issues with. Just in the last week or so saw 2 guys picked off first with 2 outs in the 9th and the tying run at in the batters box, and 3 guys getting thrown out at third less than 2 outs with a ground ball hit in front of them.

I suppose there will always be outliers seasons for just about any player in Strat, as it is at least in part a game of probability, and any bell curve will have its outliers.

That being said, just a quick look at the actuals on DD shows Jeter to be one of the true underperformers in the ranks of those players costing $10 million or more. Interestingly, the player right above him seemed just as much an underperformer -- Eddie Collins.

Now granted, with the exception of Rajah, most middle infielders will not have the same sort of stats as Ruth, Bonds, Gibson et al. And part of their value does derive from being outstanding at key defensive positions.

But the DD data is based on a LARGE set of data points -- like 150 uses for Jeter.

I have always been suspicious of the claim that "5 rings" means anything for an individual ballplayer. Does one make the same claim for Cesar Geronimo bc he was an itegral part of the Big red Machine?? And not that I am a big basketball fan, but isn't there some guy who is essentially a journeyman who has nevertheless won like 8 or 9 NBA titles??

For me personally, the case of Jeter simply reinforces my take that the best strategy in Strat is to "give unto Cesar" -- pay for offense where you might traditionally find it, and let 2B and SS be defensive positions primarily.

Different strokes. But $10 million for the type of season you will prob get from Jeter -- no thank you. Better spent on pitching in my book.

Ahhhh, the beauty of Google:

And for equal time:

Paging Johnny Murphy, Vic Raschi and Joe Collins...

It's really about your frame of reference.

Among 12+ I say Hornsby underperforms. Because his bat isn't what Bonds, Ruth or Foxx's is. But he plays a premium position, so some of his value is hidden on DD. Ditto for Jeter. Not saying he isn't over priced, just asking, how's his bat stack shaker Wagner and Wells and the top Arod, and maybe Collins and Morgan as well. That's really the appropriate compare.

In depends on how you define "underperformer"

Sorting the top 10 salaried SS by win percentage:
Yount .514
Wells .514
Boudreau .512
Banks .508
Jeter .506
Ripken .505
Wagner .504
Trammell .501
Rodriquez .493
Rizzuto .490

So Jeter is in the middle of the pack.

Similarly the top 10 salaried 2B by win percentage:
Sandberg .520
Morgan .518
Lajoie .518
Collins .516
Biggio .513
Hornsby .510
Gehringer .505
Alomar .504
Frisch .488
Fox .493

I'm only considering the most expensive version of each player since for the most part that's the one that's used the most.

I have some doubts that the win percentages are normalized correctly in DD since the weighted averages appear to exceed .5, but hopefully the numbers are relatively correct.
