Poll on Improvements to the autodraft system

Postby Valen » Tue Aug 09, 2011 12:27 pm

In another thread Bernie said...

[quote:e2b5180d44]I know there have been numerous conversations had about the auto-draft, but so far no one has organized and presented me with an official/unofficial list of problems and solutions that the community agrees upon as a whole. Feel free to discuss this more comprehensively and try to put together a plan, and I'd be happy to review and comment on it, and hopefully implement the best solutions.[/quote:e2b5180d44]

This is an attempt to present the most common suggestions I have read in the various threads and present a present a preference and a plan.

Altered Compensation[/size:e2b5180d44][/color:e2b5180d44]

Currently if you miss a player for whatever reason you get the next highest priced at that position who was not on any draft card. This option would instead give you the next highest priced player that has not been drafted yet at that point.

Modified Waiver Style[/size:e2b5180d44][/color:e2b5180d44]

Make autodraft more like waivers. If you miss on a draft pick that person drops to #25 on your draft card moving all other picks up so that you get your next player requested just like in waivers. The players you missed on and their subsequent compensation would be applied as they are encountered at the end of the draft.

Position Style System[/size:e2b5180d44][/color:e2b5180d44]

For each position you rank the available players at that position. Then you provide a ranking of position by which position you want drafted first. If you list SS as your first position then when your turn came to pick you would get your top SS. On your next turn to draft whatever position you listed second would have the top remaining player in that position list awarded to you.

Please vote for one of the above. If you would like a combination of these describe that. If you want list them in order of your preference and after enough responses have been made to be statistically significant I will compile them on a point basis (3 for #1, 2 for #2, and 1 for 3rd) and provide that ranking to Bernie.

Well I have to think of it from a programming stand point on what would be easiest to implement as well.

#2 fits that bill. I would love a slightly modified version of #2 however

player 1 --- CF
player 2 --- SS
player 3 --- SP *
player 4 --- SP (any)

Essentially when you have your list you have the option of giving that person the position you are looking for. I.e say the 2010 game where I am trying to draft Hamilton for CF, not LF. I would want a CF in return. Same thing with trying to get a 4 man rotation and getting back non * Sp's.

Other than that addition, #2

Valen, I appreciate you taking the time to put together this poll, but I really believe that more discussion is merited as to exactly what, if any, options might be presented before the community in the form of a poll.

As is, I vote for "None of the Above" and hope that we might discuss other possibilities more before putting it to a vote.

None of the above.

You could play whatifsports and every team in the league could have Mays in cf...Might be the best choice for those that want Mays when they don't get Mays. Beats thinking right. ;)

It isn't about not getting Mays. It is about getting a first pick they do want even if it is Brett or Huggins or Uecker rather than getting assigned someone noone wanted as their first pick.

The current system is not the only one that requires thinking.

Yes true, but if it's going to be changed, it should be something driven by the customer base as a compelling need. Doesn't appear to be the case so far.

Simple Fix: Option 4

Postby macnole » Tue Aug 09, 2011 4:09 pm

Option 4 is this:
Assign a weight to each pick, whether by fielding position or by draft position.

The same as some advanced rotisserie leagues such as Boxscore Sports.

That's what's missing. So essentially everyone has 100 "chips" to bid. You bid as indicated above. That weight would also determine follow-on logic.

A weight/bid is the only way to incorporate a simply codable algorithm that is somewhat simple to use and accounts for the priorities of the drafter.

How Option 4 would work

This was a very fair system when I used it during the company's infancy.

[i:56d44471f5]The drafting method is designed to allow each team's front office to assemble a team of players to its own specifications. On the draft list, players have been placed into groups of nine (according to position) and at the top of each group is a place marked BID. You have 100 bid points which you should distribute over all the sets of players. That is, the total of all your bids should equal 100. The set left blank is for you to fill out with players not listed elsewhere (all players from your league are eligible for your team, not just the ones listed). You bid on each set of players according to how important you feel that position is. For example, if you feel that a shortstop is the most important player on a team and you want to ensure yourself of a good one, you would use a higher proportion of your bid points (maybe 15 or 17) on this group of players. Of course, remember, the more you bid on one group, the fewer bid points you will have available for other positions. Every group must have a bid of at least 1 associated with it (whole number bids only), and the total of your bids should equal 100.

Secondly, you will find a space next to each player's name. This is for you to rank each player in that group, first through ninth, according to how much you would like to have him playing for you in the upcoming season(s). Each player in the group should be ranked differently; one first, one second, one third, etc. So, a completed draft list should have every player on the list with a number next to his name (1-9) and a bid at the top of each group, the sum total of which should equal 100. This drafting method provides a fair and equitable draft in which all teams have equal opportunities for any and all of the big league players.

Once we have received 8 draft lists from compatible owners in the same division (American or National) we will hold your draft. The owner who has placed the highest bid on a group of players will receive first pick from that group, the owner who has placed the second highest bid for that group will get the second pick and so on for each of the eight picks. Ties between owners who make the same bid for the same player in a group will be broken on a rotating basis to ensure the fairest drafting process. If you have the first pick in a group, you will be awarded the player you ranked first, the owner who picks second will be awarded the player he ranked first unless that player is already taken, he would then receive the player he ranked second. This continues with each owner receiving his highest ranked available player from each group. One player from each group will go undrafted (8 owners, 9 players) and become eligible to be claimed off waivers beginning with week one line-ups.[/i:56d44471f5]

Problem is it has been talked about by the community from every angle in multiple threads and nothing ever happens because there is no consensus. All I have done is take the most common options I remember from all the discussions and presented them so people can express a preference.

What we have had up until now is paralysis by analysis. I understand those who are able to take advantage of the current broken system to stomp on newbies like the idea of discussing it to death until nothing happens.

The current round of discussions was initiated by a newbie who was frustrated by the illogic and unfairness of the system. He chose to bring it up instead of just walking away. I wonder how many others just walked away without saying anything.
