Bullpen spending

Bullpen spending

PKB recently got me thinking about how much you should spend on a bullpen. Obviously, the better the rotation, the less you will need the bullpen and vice versa.

But what most determines how much the bullpen will be used?

Is it cost of rotation? Innings pitched? S9/S7?

Some pitchers?

1. John Clarkson - S9* - 483IP - $4.75
2. Curt Schilling - S7* - 256IP - $7.34
3. Bob Feller - S9* - 140IP - $7.03

Who will need the most bullpen help?

Is it Clarkson because even though he's S9* and threw a ton of innings, he is cheaper and will get hit harder?

Is it Schilling because, despite throwing 256 innings and costing the most he's only S7*

Is it Feller because even though he's S9* and expensive threw the least amount of innings?

How do you determine it?

My money is on Clarkson, because, despite the innings, he's a bigger suck than either Schilling or Feller.

The discussion between Bloody Suckhole and Feller is a little more complicated. All things being equal (which they never are), Schil will probably pitch better quality innings, on account of his higher cost and his lS7 versus Feller's S9. But Feller can, theoretically, pitch more innings without fatigue setting in. That said, probably hit the same numbers, maybe a bit in Feller's advantage, due to the S9.

Might want to back Feller with a closer who goes R1 but is lights out, while Schill could get by with an R3 who is less lights out. Makes me feel that Schill is the value play (again, park factored in... Schill can be bad in the wrong park, though I've gotten a good season out of him in Wrigley 78, which shouldn't happen).

One moron's take, of course.

Clarkson looks like a value #2-3 starter at 100M.
Schil gives you the best innings. Feller, hard to say anything about, with one use.

So, given Clarkson and Schiling in the same rotation, You might put Schil as the Ace, Clarkson behind him because Schil will need more relief, and Clarkson's innings will give your relief corps a break. When I'm thinking about it, I like to have at least one guy I can count on to go 8-9-11 IP in a start. Big luxury.
