Joe Carter

Has anyone ever had success with Joe Carter in the 80s? By success, I mean .270 plus batting average, 30 plus home runs and 100 plus RBIs? His low OBP has always kept me away from using him.

He will do the following. Hit for extra bases (2b and hr), drive in runs. He will not hit for avg or get on base. He actually has nice speed and defense and if is OBP was better he'd get more use. He is a 2nd level player due to this short coming.

Thanks Yount Fan. I am kind of stuck in the league I just joined. Drafting 7th with only Winfield as an option in the outfield. He will be gone by the time I pick. I have plent of money. Matthews is available as is Greenwell. Lezcano is another option. Currently sitting good at the following positions:

1B Murray
3B Molitor
CF Butler
C Porter
RF or LF Clark

Need a DH, another OF, SS and 2B. Not much for options at SS. I may need to go with a 3 on defense. Second still has Doran, Herr and Reynolds. Playing in Fenway. I may take a flyer on Carter. Another option is Downing.

I am a big Lezcano fan. I would consider giving him a shot. He has 3 seasons that are worth keeping and 2 that are garbage.

Lezcano would be a good move b/c as stated previously you would be able to tell if you hit his 2 garbage years, and he has huge upside for his best cards. Matthews and Greenwell often underperform what you expect, and at least 1 will still be there after season starts. As to 2nd base, I would snatch Doran quickly: he really only has that 1 awful card, otherwise usually solid, and if you have to use a 3 at SS he will be even more valuable.

Guys, thanks for the input. I will let you know how it plays out after the waiver draft on Friday. Jose Cruz has been dropped so he is now in the mix.

I'll add one more voice to the mix.

Go for Doran, second choice Reynolds. Herr often disappoints.

Try Cruz or Lezcano before you go to Carter. Matthews (and Carter, for that matter) will be out there since he's usually a fallback once the better players reveal a bad card.

I use both Cruz and Lezcano often. Sixto has the big upside, with two lesser but playable cards, and Cruz has three very playable cards-- at least two of which have positive clutch. He usually rocks righties too.

You may need to determine whether you're too right-handed or not. As there tend to be more lefty-bashing RH hitters on the wire, Cruz may be the wiser place to start. He's also less of an injury risk.

But if you have money, try to grab both of them. Make Clark your DH and play these guys in the corners.

Thanks for the advice Pillpop. I do worry about being a bit too much right handed depending on who I pick up.

I think Pillpop pretty much sums everything up correctly. I second everything he said.
