CDROM question

CDROM question

Postby Valen » Fri Aug 26, 2011 10:32 pm

I just received the ver 16 cdrom game. When I click to install rosters for every season there is ...

Deluxe Season Rosters,*PHC*
and
Deluxe Season Rosters, Setup for AS PLAYED,*PHC*
except for the 1876-1899 seasons which are all ...
Season Rosters, AS PLAYED,*PHC*

What is the difference? Which should I be installing?

Also, I cannot get the help file to load. Instructions say to download the winhlp32 but I cannot get that to download from the Microsoft site.

Anyone have that and would be willing to email it to me (Vista)?

Ok, I switched from IE to firefox and the download of winhlp32 was successful.

The help says that they no longer support the 3.5" diskettes.

Does that mean those seasons I purchased are now trash?
Do I really have to purchase them again?

Not quite sure what you're describing, but "as played" means you will be playing with the real transactions and lineups that occurred each day of that season. So, entirely up to you whether that's what you want or not. (If you're putting together fantasy teams like we do at TSN, obviously not... it is a "replay" thing.) I'm guessing "PHC" means individualized pitcher hitting cards... even if you install them, you don't need to use them if you don't want to, so there is no harm taking them. Like I said, not really sure what you're looking at.

Anyway, you can send them the disks, and they will send you the confirmation numbers that you need to enter into the program. Don't know the details of this, sorry. If it's not anywhere in the help files (which would be a little surprising), I'm sure there's a generic customer service e-mail on their website that can get you started in the right direction.

Thanks Dean. You are very helpful as usual.

It would be nice if the help would explain you can send in your disks instead of just saying they cannot be used. I had actually forgot about those until I read that line in the help. Probably means a couple of the seasons I purchased are ones I already own. :(

I think their offer to update the old floppies (for $2 per) has expired. You can check on their web site.

I find SOM's new security system extremely user unfriendly. What do I do if my computer crashes?

It almost makes me want to switch to Rob Neyer Baseball or the Dynasty League site.

Just located my old disks. I did in fact buy 3 seasons I already had. :(

They give you a card with a code on it. If you have to reinstall the program, you type the code in again. It's not a problem at all. [i:c80001772a]Before[/i:c80001772a] was when you had a problem, because you were only allowed one "authorization" that was kept in a file on your computer, so if you had to reformat your hard drive, you lost the authorization file.

I've had this happen twice. The two best solutions for this are:

1) Keep all of the auth codes in a safe place. After you are up and running on a new drive, submit a request to Glen Head for resets on your auth codes because of a hard drive crash (include all of the auth codes in the email). They will send you a link and instructions to reset them online.

2) Before you have a HD crash, buy a 1TB USB hard drive (<$100) and laptop imaging software (<$50) and image your PC. Do this periodically and then if you have a crash that can be fixed by replacing the HD in the laptop, you can overlay the image on top of the new drive and all of your data will be back (ALL of your applications, not just SOM :-) )

Option 2 is smart to do regardless of SOM. For under $150 you can completely backup your home PCs and recover painlessly from crashes or major viruses.

If you have not already done so you should use the site below for strat cd questions, both technical and strategic. Not that there's anything wrong with asking questions here, but that forum is only about the computer cd game (& board game) and will probably be more useful than the SOMO site.
