My Wife and ATG 6!

Postby Simon31 » Sun Aug 28, 2011 11:12 am

Many moons ago and early in our relationship, my girlfriend( now my wife,) watched my buddies and I play our Strat board game on her kitchen table.
After months of this she finally got curious enough that I was able to talk her into drafting a team using our usual method of players in their respective piles based on positions. Needless to say...she kicked my butt!
Now that might not be saying a lot, considering my record here, but she has always been a good gamer as worlds have collapsed under her rule in "RISK", Vercingetorix was able to escape his entrapment in "Ceasar at Alasia" and her tribes were always able to advance faster than mine in "Civilization" (The Avalon Hill Version) I have been after her now for years to try ATG with no luck. Now, with the coercive powers of my buddy Muadib1950, were putting the screws to her! I fully believe she would buckle under the pressure of this massive community of Strat-O-Holics!
So heres my proposal....1 wife....1 team....and I never bug her again!!!
What say you you all???

Never bug her again might be more promise than you can keep. Maybe offer a week's worth of housecleaning instead. :D

I'm a retired journalist who now plays a lot of duplicate bridge (even traveling on some occasions to regional or national tournaments). I'm convinced my wife would be a pretty good bridge player, but have never been able to get her to try the game even just once.

I used to consider myself a reasonable wordsmith and enjoyed playing Scrabble. After she beat me in that game for something like 15 games in a row, I quit playing, and have never looked at a Scrabble board since.

Do I now care if she never plays bridge? Heck, no!

Would I ever like her to try Strat? A thousand times Heck, no!

Scrabble will humble anyone who doesn't play regularly. Playing with good people regularly (and training with computer help against the computer) will massively improve your game.

My wife would never play "Baseball Porn" as she refers to strat. And I try to field no more than 3 or 4 teams at a time, can't imagine her here. That being said, get her in here with us, and make sure she doesn't start out against the big boys like Nev or Petro or Frank Bailey... have her join a public league with the rest of us mediocre players.

114 views and only 17 votes isn't getting her to crack...just yet...although, she loved bontomn's post and the crack about "Baseball Porn!" She came out of the bedroom one night about 2 in the morning and asked me what I was doing. Fearing for my well being I told her "porn sites!" She snapped back.."You are NOT! Your playing with your STRAT TEAMS again!" She knows me too well!

I got my wife a couple of teams for $15 with the new player sale. Needless to say her teams so far have been awesome! (Much better than my best on the first try).

MY coercive powers? Perish the thought! She picks staffs better than he, at least according to Dave, and all I wanted was for him to ... you know ... was offer to paint her toe nails, you know, romantic like ... like in Bull Dhooo RAM ... in exchange for Strat help ... and whatever else might have happened as nature took its course ... and thereby improve his teams instead of her just occasionally chastising their poor performance ...

Also, what Dave would like to do is form a League of half husbands, and half wives ... which I guess he was just too shy to propose ... or ... ooops ... maybe he was saving that for next week and I just blew the surprise.

Be that as it may, it is up to Dave to find that sweet spot that coaxes her at least to pick his pitching staffs for him, then he can fiddle with them as she obviously has more important things to do than spend the next two months obsessing over them each morning!

As to this poll, maybe Dave's just getting his staffs and polls mixed up ... Then again ... maybe Dave's wife just isn't up to it ... you know ... she benefited from beginner's luck or some such back in the day ... 8-)
