OK, I did a little digging on Retrosheet.org. On August 24, 2006 at Comerica Park against the Tigers, White Sox LFer Pablo Ozuna threw out Tigers first baseman Sean Casey from LF on what should have been a base hit. Here's the play by play from Retrosheet:
[b:2502c32e16]TIGERS 5TH: Casey lined to third (third to left to first); line tipped off 3bman's glove. Casey thought it was caught and stopped. It deflected to left and Casey started running, but throw just beat him; Perez popped to second; Inge walked; Wilson flied to right; 0 R, 0 H, 0 E, 1 LOB. White Sox 7, Tigers 0.[/b:2502c32e16]
In all the years I've been watching baseball, I've never seen a play like that. Also, Sox TV broadcasters Ken "Hawk" Harrelson and Darin Jackson, both former big league OFers with 75+ years combined in the game, also said that they had never before seen such a play.
Kudos to rburgh and OakAth72 for being able to remember that Sean Casey was the batter and to OakAth72 for having a pretty good recollection of the circumstances involved.
When I get time, I'll do a little more research and see if I can find the game mentioned in my earlier post where Wilson threw out Moreland at 1B from RF. - Bernie W
