outfielders that...

I was at a Tribe game last year and Mike Redmond was thrown out at first by the Oakland Right Fielder. I think it was Ryan Sweeney.

I don't know why some of these guys insist on lugging a piano with them every time they head to first base.

It was not by the RFer but Josh Hamilton got thrown out by Jose Bautista a couple times from RF. They overshifted the IF moving Bautista all the way over to short RF. RFer played deep RF and Jose played short RF. Hamilton smoked one hopper to Bautista who easily threw him out. I think there was another play where Hamilton hit a ground ball so hard it went right through the shifted infield to a waiting Bautista.

That strategy was so successful in fact I am surprised nobody has copied it.

I can remember Keith Moreland, then playing with the Cubs, hitting a shot to RF against the Phillies in Veterans Stadium that was cleanly fielded by Glenn Wilson, who promptly fired a strike to first to get the embarrassed lead footed Moreland.

Also, if memory serves correctly, I seem to recall utility man Pablo Ozuna of the White Sox, not exactly known for his D or arm, throwing out a batter at first base from LEFT FIELD several years ago. I can't remember who the batter was. - Bernie W

With the way teams play the shift, David Ortiz gets thrown out from Right Field on a regular basis. It's just that it is the second baseman who is out there rather than the right fielder.

Ozuna throws out a batter from LF!

Postby BDWard » Mon Aug 29, 2011 1:51 pm

OK, I did a little digging on Retrosheet.org. On August 24, 2006 at Comerica Park against the Tigers, White Sox LFer Pablo Ozuna threw out Tigers first baseman Sean Casey from LF on what should have been a base hit. Here's the play by play from Retrosheet:

[b:2502c32e16]TIGERS 5TH: Casey lined to third (third to left to first); line tipped off 3bman's glove. Casey thought it was caught and stopped. It deflected to left and Casey started running, but throw just beat him; Perez popped to second; Inge walked; Wilson flied to right; 0 R, 0 H, 0 E, 1 LOB. White Sox 7, Tigers 0.[/b:2502c32e16]

In all the years I've been watching baseball, I've never seen a play like that. Also, Sox TV broadcasters Ken "Hawk" Harrelson and Darin Jackson, both former big league OFers with 75+ years combined in the game, also said that they had never before seen such a play.

Kudos to rburgh and OakAth72 for being able to remember that Sean Casey was the batter and to OakAth72 for having a pretty good recollection of the circumstances involved.

When I get time, I'll do a little more research and see if I can find the game mentioned in my earlier post where Wilson threw out Moreland at 1B from RF. - Bernie W

Glenn Wilson throws out Keith Moreland at 1B from RF!

Postby BDWard » Mon Aug 29, 2011 3:36 pm

I had a chance to do some more digging on Retrosheet.org. On September 29, 1986 at Veterans Stadium, Phillies RFer Glenn Wilson threw out Cubs RFer Keith Moreland at 1B on what should have been a line drive base hit to RF. Here's the play by play from Retrosheet:

[b:288585afa4]CUBS 1ST: Walker singled; Walker stole second; Sandberg doubled [Walker scored]; Palmeiro grounded out (second to first) [Sandberg to third]; Moreland grounded out (right to first) [Sandberg scored]; Moreland thrown out on apparent line-drive single; Durham flied out to left; 2 R, 2 H, 0 E, 0 LOB. Cubs 2, Phillies 0.[/b:288585afa4]

This was not a case of Moreland getting caught rounding the bag too far. I can still remember Moreland throwing his hands up in embarrassment and disgust as the throw from Wilson in RF beat him at 1B. The replay was shown on the news that night. - Bernie W

I watched a lot of Cubs baseball on WGN in 1987. I distinctly remember Andre Dawson gunning down guys at first. He probably tried more than he was successful, however.
