Manager ratings

PART ONE

I recently passed the 1000 point manager rating threshold in my long and storied ATG career, which now makes my choices for which league to join a little more restrictive, since there have been many "less than (pick a number)" leagues that have come and gone, and 1000 is one of the more popular ones.

It's another hot late summer day, and on a whim, I took a closer look at those all-important manager ratings to see if there's any valid reason to exclude people from your league based on the number of points they've accumulated.

My first thought was, are there any managers out there that I never want to see in the same division as me, because they seem to always make the playoffs, which leaves me fighting for the wildcard? So percentage of playoffs per completed team would seem to be an important consideration. So would overall winning percentage. It seems if you win at least 90 games you're virtually guaranteed of making the playoffs, so playoff % and winning % should go hand-in-hand. Anyone with a winning percentage of .540 or more has probably been successful most of the time. The third consideration has to be a minimum number of teams. You might have a great playoff and winning percentage with 5 or 6 teams, but I think it's more impressive / intimidating if someone's been able to do that with dozens of teams in many ballparks and different salary caps.

I wanted to look at the current batch of active managers we're most likely to encounter in open leagues, but since I have no idea whether I'm looking at completed or still-active teams in ATG6, I decided to look back at ATG5.

PART FOUR

Conclusions: It seems like anyone who averages more than 30 rating points per completed team is probably the best measure of how impressive / intimidating another manager in your league is, although I think that number can be skewed by that silly "Standard" or "Advanced" designation. Someone who plays only in standard leagues and does really well will have lower rating points even if they have a high winning percentage and make the playoffs more than 70% of the time. But that's probably a better measure of who you'd want to exclude from a beginner's league than total points. Clearly guys like DonFESQ and springer0432 aren't novices and their manager rating reflects that. But I think some of the ones that played only a dozen or so teams are more likely to keep you from making the playoffs if they are in your division, even though they may have accumulated "only" 1000 or 2000 points. But when I look at the winning percentages of people that were successful in ATG5 it doesn't neccessarily carry over to ATG6, myself being the best example, but then again the playoff and championship numbers may be artificially low for teams still in progress.

I think Dusty Hill is the best, because he can copy anyone's style.

It's ok, though. I can console myself with the fact I am going to win my first Fantasy Football game. Last year, I didn't win my first game until Week 4!

He's done it to me more than once has he just done it to you too?

I'd ask him but I've learned he'll just lie about it...or misremember

Someone as successful as DonFESQ can play ... almost for free. If we assume 70% make the playoffs, 50% in the finals and 30% championships, that's 8 credits earned for every 10 teams. Nice.
