Is it Okay to copy someones team???

Postby Salty » Mon Sep 12, 2011 10:10 am

Having just had one of my teams copied by another manager-

(hes in the same division as my team in another/other league(s), and put on players that probably most people wouldn't have on their draft card for that park as a first option, and were not compensation as the manager claimed to me, since they were also on my draft card)

I am wondering how the community feels about this in general?

Is it okay to do it under any circumstances?
Is some copying okay as long as its not a whole team?
Where do you think the lines are?

Recognizing that everyone looks at everyone else's team Im not referring to a player here or there- nor obvious stuff, like you put Bob Gibson on in a righty park, or a Barry Bonds type player.

Im talkin bout copying a ballpark (not unused but not a super popular one), putting the same players on your draft list as were on the team you looked at while making maybe a few changes for the players you felt could be improved on.

Please weigh in:

PS: If you are curious, I will post the 4 or 5 players that lead me to the 'mimicking' conclusion and the park.

If someone wants to do that, then whatever . . . it's their money I suppose. Imitation is supposed to be a form of flattery, but I know it can be annoying at the same time. Copying someone elses team kind of takes the fun out of the game if you ask me. I personally would never do it. Most of my enjoyment comes from filling out the draft card and constructing my team post-waivers.

Is it within the rules?... technically it seems like it is.
But is it appropriate?... I'd say it's pretty questionable.

In my opinion, even if someone could justify (to his/her self) copying another manager's drafted or preferrred team, I think choosing to do so in a league where the copied manager also has a team, and hence where they may be seeking the same exact players, is somehwere between (a) quite annoying and (b) overtly confrontational.

We all face a form of this dilemma in live drafts, where we have seen and envied players that we know other managers prefer as well, and so draft strategy must be tweaked, but... in non-live drafts where an all or nothing type draft card is duplicated just causes more issues than it should be worth.

It is every manager's $20-$25 to spend, but we're also a community with enough demonstrated sportsmanship for me to offer this... although it is technically one's (rule-based) right to duplicate a team, to me it goes enough against the common grain enough to make it practically unacceptable.

While I will never have my teams copied (sniff sniff) I can understand why both why managers might be tempted (to find out how a successful team is truly successful) and why those copied might find it more than annoying (they put in the work devising the details).

It might be interesting to have a two season league in which the first season is played out normally (but with no in season drops or trades) and the second season would be literally the same rosters and stadiums but randomly assigned (perhaps divisions randomly assigned too). But like all here it has probably already been done.

absolutely it's ok. Many reasons.

1. Who's to say any one of us has purely original thoughts. It's not like we can patent these arrangements.
2. Who's to say the same players will be successful in a different league, different conditions and opponent makeups etc.
3. What makes your $25 more valuable or entitling than someone else's?
4. What's the "rule" on using previously "used" players or combinations of players...wait didn't you know that no one can use Keefe, Waddell, Sadecki, and Peters for a pitching staff? I have used those guys successfully--you cannot use them if we're in a league. just so you know.
5. There's no guarantee the person can get all the players. We never really get to build a team in isolation--it's always against the preferences of others.

Now go beat that goober by attacking your weaknesses...and learn from it!
Nuff said!
cheers

Keeping in mind some players were missed in the auto draft here are the similarities:

Same:
Starting C
Backup C
Starting1B
Starting2B
StartingCF
RF Platoon
4 SPS,
a 5th I used on another team in same park, as well as the 3B, and LF.

so basically all of the starters, except SS(possible comp pick) were from either 1,2 or both teams.

I believe almost the entire rest of the roster were players missed/compensated for by the auto draft. Keep in mind its a 200 draft so you can get a reasonable idea that someone like Wynn was likely compensatory as well as say, the cheap relievers.

Bottom line is I see only one usable starting hitter and one usable RP who were not on my squad- and even those were likely compensation picks for more obvious choices.

It doesn't matter to me...ive tried to copy my own successful teams but you are counting on pretty much the same dice rolls, and league wide manager settings, ballpark and rosters to be the same from league to league. If someone had the money it would be a fun experiment, draft 2 entire leagues with same exact rosters, manager settings, and ballparks bet the results wouldnt be the same, maybe close for a couple of teams. I've rerun (autoplay) entire seasons on my CD rom and had teams results vary as much as 20 games or so with same exact settings and rosters ...You still have to roll the cyber dice...

I'm going to replay the 1969 season 3 times, everything exactly the same for all the replays..curious to see how it plays out.

I've seen both teams in question...and talking from experience it's obvious that Salt's team right down to a rarely used park in 200m was copied.

Most of Macnoie points miss "what I think" Salt's asking....It's not at all whether they'll do well or not, or even if he gets them all...not about that at all...His intent was to completely copy someone's team right down to the park...not whether he can get them all, or play them well....So is copying cool with you guys?

Funny thing is while I talked to Salt and the community about this in the past, most including Salt suggesting I should relax and not worry about it...Consider that "perhaps" once it happens to you, you might be surprised by how the "relax" answer, is a easier said than done ;)

...and with the 'shoe' (pun for ya N) being on the other foot, I do see why it not at all fun- and being lied to about it, even less fun.
Had the manager in question just said, yes, I looked at your team, I wouldnt nearly be as upset.
This game is hard enough, even I suspect, for the players who have had good success and have been playing a long time- and while it may seem right to say, just come up with something better to deal with it- thats not a reasonable option; kind of like saying, invent another MoneyBall.
Sure it can be done, but easy? NO.
