ATG new card teasers (new for Wed. 9/14)

Postby Valen » Tue Sep 13, 2011 7:28 pm

Wait a minute. Something is wrong with this picture. The 74 Brock steal ratings were *3-7/- (20-16). This version has good jump rating reduced to 19. The fielding rating has improved from lf-4(+1)e16 to e12.

This version while good will not be the stolen base force it should be. I feel like I just got a birthday cake but someone forgot to put the icing on.

Wish we had an option to have leagues with the ballpark effects turned off. They seem to exert a disproportionate influence on the game.

Bernie thought you might benefit from the reduced calorie birthday cake. But I agree, he should be a 20.

[quote:e71a79b506]Bernie:

We currently have someone like Joe Wood that is available as a hitter and pitcher. If you own one card, you own both and could switch if you wanted.

Is it that big of a deal that we need to now change how it is handled?

It looks like there is only 13 or 14 series that Ruth wouldn't pitch in that he would be available as a hitter. It would have to be close when weighing the offense and pitching for a person to consider using a player both ways. Even in a $200M league, I can't see someone making the swap from the pitcher to the hitter. If someone wants to play the game of swapping the player, I say let them and see how long they could do it before running out of money.

In a live draft with no salary cap, it could be done. If someone really wants to do it, why not let them. It would reflect players who pitched and then fielded a position on their "off" days from pitching.

Even though for regular-cap leagues the drop penalty does discourage this exploit, there would be cases where it could still be an unnatural advantage, and we need to address that.

Doesn't the fact that Ruth could be pitching to Ruth make it an unnatural advantage? More so than Ruth pitching every 4 days and hitting only for 13 or 14 series in a year. [/quote:e71a79b506]

I agree with Joe 100%

Personally, I'd rather not have a Ruth face a Ruth. I know it's all fantasy, but my suspension of belief draws the line here, I think. Why not let the same owner have both, if he wants to spend the $$$? If a guy ends up with the hitting and pitching Ruth, and wants to spend the money for them ($23mish, assuming the higher priced hitting Ruth, and the pitching Ruth going for around $9m, give or take a little), ranks them high enough and gets both, more power to him. Certainly can't imagine it being a popular strategy in $100m cap and lower leagues. But certainly fun in higher cap and some theme leagues. I'm not emotional about it, either way. But that's my two cents.

Brock stole 118 bases but was nabbed 33 times, according to baseball reference. If that's the case, his success rate would be under 80% and therefore his first number would be 18. Perhaps AAA *2-8,11/- (18-15) would be more appropriate; an even bigger good lead chance but a lower top-end success rate.

Metaphysical question. If Ruth pitched to Ruth, would the Babe the batter triumph because he would know what would be coming, or would Babe the hurler triumph because he would know what Babe the hitter was expecting and throw something else?

Just asking.

I'd say edge to Ruth the pitcher. Even the greatest of hitters make outs at least 6 out of 10 times. I would think knowing your hitting counterparts weak spots, and being a good enough pitcher to locate your pitches (I'm assuming Ruth the pitcher would be) would give you an advantage.

Yes, but Ruth threw those pitches in 1916, not knowing what he'd be like as a hitter in the future. The 1921 Babe should have been able to remember what to expect from himself five years earlier. Now by 1927, Ruth probably didn't remember or care what he was like in 1916 and they'd be back to even, or as you say above, advantage pitcher.
