Is it Okay to copy someones team???

Postby Salty » Wed Sep 14, 2011 4:31 pm

Im kind of torn on the 'naming names' thing, because the person finally did admit that they 'looked at my team' albeit after the initial denial.

Not entirely sure why I have such an aversion to simply saying who it is, but I do.

Psychoanalysis accepted here...

Forward pass...that's my invention. :D

"Strategic duplication?"

Reminds me of when "Friendly Fire" became "Collateral Damage."

Isn't it really like looking at someone's hand in poker, then being able to shuffle around the cards in YOUR hand? The aspect of direct competition using the same resources means the copier has an advantage over the person being copied, since the latter cannot change his cards, park etc.

motherscratcher is right: It's beyond copying, now that I think about it. It really is cheating. For example, you and I might both run the West Coast offense, but I'm not taking your players to run it against you. Nor do I know your plays beforehand, as someone who views my players will. It isn't copying a strategy so much as it is copying a strategy, then taking the resources required to run it. It's only fair if both managers get the same players. But since they can't, one of them is going to have a better chance at the strategy succeeding than the other, because the strat is dependent upon the players on the card.

(and I don't know why this didn't occur to me before).

I'm very impressed that you've all been able to stay on point and civil even in disagreement.

Now continue you dirty rat bastages.

Given the depth of the player pool, there are secondary options for nearly every strategic option (save Hornsby, really).

This thread is making me want to buy credits for the first time in 10months, just to copy Nev's old teams...

Nev reminded me of something Capt Lou Albano always used to say:

"Often Imitated, Never Duplicated..."

I read the first few pages and skipped to the end, so apologies if I missed a plot twist...

1) I copied a team once, and I don't mind admitting it. It was Petrosian's. Can't remember which league but it was about five years ago. I was having a real hard time getting over the newbie hump and I wanted to see what it was about this magical combination of guys that worked for him. So I did it as an experiment. His team kicked ***. Mine SUCKED. That's because half of what makes a team good is how it'll work against the rest of the league. I learned the value of that from that team.

2) Who cares? How does it affect you? Take it as flattery and move on. Think long and hard about that second question. How is your day to day enjoyment of this game altered by the fact that someone built a team that looks like one of yours? If the problem is that he's taking players that you'd otherwise be drafting, then that would suggest that [b:74558620fc]you are copying your own teams[/b:74558620fc], and if that's a bad thing, then shame on you both. So he copied you, which he obviously did. So what? If all he's going to do is copy peoples teams, then I hope I'm in a lot of leagues with that guy because he's going to lose more than he's going to win.

3) My honest advice is to take it as flattery and move on.

Budo, all other arguments aside-

You honestly don't see the difference between copying yourself and someone else doing it?

ERGO: If Stevie Wonder tries to sing a song like Stevie Wonder thats the same thing as Rod Stewart trying to sound/sing like Stevie Wonder, while claiming that's the Rod Stewart sound?
