Is it Okay to copy someones team???

Postby thetallguy747 » Thu Sep 15, 2011 9:47 pm

Some time back I started using Player X, who rarely got used and when he did, it was a more expensive and less potent season. I could list him at the very bottom of my draft card with a minimum 90% probability I would get him. Player X hit extremely well and the teams were successful. Since then Player X has been drafted in every 80M league I've entered, usually used in the same ballpark I use him in. I now have to list him first to have a chance to draft him.

Happy me? No. But them's the breaks.

I don't care if someone would want to copy my team, my park, or individual player choices. If I'm successful, which sometimes I am, then why wouldn't a new or struggling manager not want to try some or all of the things which the veteran managers with proven tracks records are doing.

I think this happens all the time. The evolution of player/park/balance/bias choices in ATG is sort of like a snake dance. The successful managers forge their way through the player and stadium pools and the rest of the managers sort of form in a snake line behind them, not always sure where the dance is taking them or why, but assuming that somewhere along the dance line they'll get it all figured out. At least that's the way it seems to me.

Copying someone else's team chapter and verse is rather audacious. Most would try to conceal their intentions to some degree. But it still doesn't bother me.

This thread is sort of ironic in that in real life baseball, copying is done all the time. If one franchise has success by trying a new formula, other teams follow suit and before long it becomes the standard. Eventually another team will step out in front and challenge the standard by trying something new. And if they're successful, all the other teams will turn course and start off in the new direction. That's why I'm rooting for Nolan Ryan, who is determined to develop SP's who can pitch complete games. If he's successful and the Rangers win consistently with that approach, alot of GM's are going to start asking themselves why they are paying all these middle men and setup guys 3M a year to get a couple of outs.

Because their only purpose is to provide filler for us vets to beat up on. Someone has to pay the $20 to be the losers in these leagues so we can store up our credits. These people should not forget their place/role and try copying or any other means of competing.

As per my original post, I still do not believe the type of copying Salt describes is OK...

I guess I distinguish between...

Copying that is OK... team styles, types of player combinations, approaches to pitching/bullpen, rosters and use items, etc.

Copying that is not OK... copying that gets so specific that it is literally several/many players copied from a specific single team, compounded by use of same infrequent ballpark, compounded by even copying scrubs, compounded by doing so in league where copied manager is also playing); to me, though I am not sure where precisely, I think somewhere along the way "the line" was crossed.

Question for those managers who think copying teams is OK, assuming no one would mind if links were posted to every team managed? Seems not right to me, but maybe I am over zealous in my convictions :?

Every team is public knowledge. I don't have any exclusive rights to the players I used back in 2003. Or 2004. or ATG.

When does the "copyright" start and end? What is the defined "thing" that is being copied, specifically and where's the documentation for the patent books?

Maybe we need to register teams and put them off limits...if you happen to draft a key combo of players, the autodraft will reject it.

By the way...what makes Saltman (who is a good guy) assume he was the first to use that combo? Are you 100% sure? If so, how?

Yes I am all for links to be provided for every team played. It used to be that way before someone objected and they went to this silly point system and hidden links only available to the tribal elders.

If anyone wants to post links to any of my team or all, go ahead, I already know certain people have access to the links when they want it, why not everyone?

This game is in essence remarkably like chess and would be best suited with intense study. Watching other teams is by far the most enjoyable aspect of the leagues to me. To begin to claim player/park combinations is weird. Could one imagine Petrosian the chess player, not the strat player to not allow anyone to copy his style? If someone takes all your players there should be a way for you to adjust if you understand the game. My god there are now unlimited combinations, you want my last 24 players out of 3000+ go ahead. In ATGII I posted exactly how I played the game and what players to use and what substitutes I used and the reason for my relief pitchers.

There is repeat, no way just copying a team should work out in the long run because every new league has different components. Surely the best players understand that, or really do you NEED those players?

Do people really think they should play the same team whether your division is all Hilltop or all Dunn?? And this talk of rare ballparks? Please unless there is some secret code to accumulate powers like in Warcraft? I know many would like to have stratomatic be a games where level 80 would always no matter what defeat a level 3 but this is a different game, and adjusting is the key. If you are copying you are already admitting you don't have your own idea and I am not too worried about those types of players "ruining" the game. And if it is part of studying the game to see how you can do with an identical team, good luck to you.

In good faith here are my championship teams in ATVI I hereby give explicit permission to copy any part or whole of any of these or any other teams I have played in Stratomatic, furthermore, if you are a rookie and would like explanations of why I did certain things PM me and I will explain my logic.

I can't believe that so many people here and some smart ones like Charlie still don't understand [b:ae683bd5d5][u:ae683bd5d5]it's NOT ABOUT WHETHER THE COPYING TEAM IS SUCCESSFUL....It's NOT ABOUT WHETHER YOU CAN MODIFY YOUR OWN TEAM TO BE SUCCESSFUL... It's NOT ABOUT COMBINATIONS unless you think 25 men right down to the nickel scrub and the stadium is copying a "combination" of someone's team[/u:ae683bd5d5].[/b:ae683bd5d5]

You know as I get older I realize more than ever why we are, and always have been, and always will be a war torn civilization. (probably shouldn't even think of ourselves as civilized) because after thousands of years we still can't communicate effectively with one another.

I do not get the logic here NEV. This is a game, you take players, I adjust. someone wants the last 24 I took because they think there is some "secret" in my selections? You should know that is not the case, so go ahead and copy them. How are you harmed? They will not know your settings or adjustments throughout a year. I would have a good laugh when someone copies a winning formula and can't win with it.

Otherwise there has to be an agreed upon rule on the amount of players one can take in a certain ballpark from a successful manager. So what is the proper amount you can take from a team 22? 20? 18? 9? ? what exactly is the cutoff? Since I think this is not definable the answer is take whatever you want. to me and I will adjust anyway.
