For this theme, I am not trying to be huge on the rules, when it comes to roster assembly (in the past, I have run similar leagues under very strict guidelines trying to produce teams/players with similar stats). So if you need to downgrade a player or want to upgrade a player because you have cap space that is up to you.
My general thought is if I wanted to play with a 1970's A's team for example, but Catfish was my favorite player and I wanted to use his best card (72 I think), that would be the year I chose and then fill in around him. The results might be the same as the 1973 A's (because that is the team roster with the most cards in ATG) but with Catfish replaced for 1974, but the spirit is that I wanted to use the 1972 season built around my favorite player and I filled in the best fit for the players around him. Now if I went that route I would use Duncan as catcher instead of Fosse, and the OF might be a bit tougher to figure out, but I think you get the point. How you interpret best fit for each of you I am leaving up to you.
For me, the 1989 Giants neatly fit into my favorite team as well as best seasons by the two stars from that team. And the fact that the 3B for 1989 isn't represented so I upgraded to M. Williams 1990 which is an obvious plus for the online team. However, for me personally, if there was a 1989 Riles or Williams card in the set, I would have used it, because this team is suppose to be the 1989 Giants.
I leave it to each of you to interpret your own rules in putting together your rosters, because at the end of the day its about playing with favorite cards/players that you would otherwise never/rarely use (have you seen Uribe and Thompson as anyone's DP combo often in ATG?)
Lastly based on teams people are discussing including, if you chose a team which overlaps a key player (i.e. Cubs and Dodgers for Cey) I would expect the team entered later in the process to figure out who they will use as a replacement.
