Poll-One That Got Away ?

1. 1903 Boston Americans (Red Sox), down 1-3, won World Series 5-3 over Pittsburgh (best of nine format).

2. 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates, down 1-3, won World Series 4-3 over Washington.

3. 1958 New York Yankees, down 1-3, won World Series 4-3 over Milwaukee.

4. 1968 Detroit Tigers, down 1-3, won World Series 4-3 over St. Louis.

5. 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates, down 1-3, won World Series 4-3 over Baltimore.

6. 1985 Kansas City Royals, down 1-3, won World Series 4-3 over St. Louis.

44 teams have been up 3-1 in WS play. 38 went on to win the series, the six above were the only exceptions. Thus 86.3% of the teams up 3-1 won the series.

I bet it happens way more than that here in ATG.

In real life, a team down 3-1 is probably not an equal partner in the series. They lack home field advantage in the series at the least.

Not sure how they lack home field advantage. Let's say the team with the home field advantage splits the first two games at home and then loses two in a row. They are down 3-1 but still have two of the three potentially remaining games at home, no?

GREAT responses. in my case, they had home field advantage, AND we were very evenly matched in the reg. season. We split it 6-6, with each winning 4 of 6 at home. This team had the advantage of having a stopper in Randy Johnson winning both his games, and my big guns simply didn't hit as expected.

I haven't yet pulled the stats on that direct question, but my team stats database does show that there have been 452 teams in ATG6 that were up 3-1 in a plyoff series that won the very next game and thus the series in 5 games.... that's a lot of teams that did NOT choke with the 3-1 series lead.

23% of ALL playoff series in ATG6 ended by teams with a 3-1 series lead closing it out in game 5....

Happened again last night. My team lost the first two games of the championship series at home, headed to their home park where they had a 56-25 regular season record. I expected to be swept in 4 games. Lost the next game to go down 0-3, then won the last four games. This hardly ever happens in real life. But in the sim world it does, all the time.

Of course I'm happy my team won, but I can sympathize with the other manager here. I've lost count how many times my team was up 3-0 or 3-1 in a 7-game playoff, or up 2-0 in a 5-game semi-final and ended up losing. The semi-final losses are the toughest - you end up with nothing.

Been there too...

I've been on both sides too, my friend....I, like a few of you, felt like I had a couple players who must have dabbled in the black arts and brought a curse upon the clubhouse...glad to see statistical data to negate this claim (although, my managers are now not allowing players to own black-cats and are refusing to play on any Friday the 13th). :)
