I think memories of this season will have a bitter taste for BoSox fans.

Expectations were sky-high. In the preseason predictions, [b:7cb05631f5]ALL[/b:7cb05631f5] 45 ESPN baseball "experts" picked Boston to win the AL East, 33 of those picked them to win the World Series, 9 to lose the World Series, and only 3 said they would lose in the first round.

Except for first two weeks and the last two weeks of the season, I believe they had the best record in baseball, and probably the worst record at the beginning and the end of the season. But that month of games that bookended their season cost them dearly. They all count the same ...

I never pay attention to pre-season predictions in any sport. Looking back, 95% are wrong. That being said, the Sox had a good team, and should have made the playoffs, IMO. BUT....[i:bc772afe29]should[/i:bc772afe29] have, and [i:bc772afe29]did[/i:bc772afe29], are often radically different things. As tonight showed. Disappointed as a Red Sox fan, as any fan of his team would be. But, an exciting night of baseball, as a fan of the sport.

Shoot! I couldn't bear to watch the Sox blow it, so I settled for the Padres-Cubs game. Much happier as a result.

That should have been the first mark of panic. If EVERY nattering nabob of nincompoopery at ESPN picks you to win the AL East, the Wild Card is your best bet.

Seriously, will one of those goons, at some point, just figure this out. The Yankees win the AL East just about every year. Pick em to win it, be right for a change. Oh yeah, The Yankees have won the world series 27 total times, been in it another 9 or something. They're a good bet to be in the World Series, every year.
