Normalization

[quote:2df67540b9="TomSiebert"]Because the search function for these chat pages doesn't work (404 for me at least), I can't find an old thread from a couple years back when Normalization for contemporary Strat cards WAS on for the game, and people even got credits for it. But it's been done in the past. It may not be happening now. But I've seen such wild swings from teams of mine, it just makes me wonder/suspicious/paranoid.

TSN SOM does use certain of the computer game's maximum rules. Below is a link that explains some of these. However, none of the rules "normalizes" results by reducing the effectiveness of a player or team that has been doing well (or vice versa).

http://somonline.wikia.com/wiki/Maximum_Rules

Normal random results for [i:2df67540b9]anything [/i:2df67540b9]can lead to wild swings in "expected" results. For example, let's say you are going to simulate a baseball season using a coin. Flip a coin: heads your team wins; tails your team loses.

Your coin-flip team gets hot and is 55 wins and 25 losses after 80 "games." The odds are about 1/1000 that you lose the next ten games in a row, and the odds are about 1/100 you lose 9 out of your next 10. (Incidentally, odds are the same for winning 10 of 10 or 9 of 10.)

So, if you hit a cold streak and lose 10 coin flips in a row, it's bad luck. Nobody changed or altered your coin, but if your coin is being virtually flipped by a computer a thousand miles away, it sure might seem like it!

Thank you, Coyote. I remain dubious, but less so (because of precedent), and appreciate the perspective provided by so many community members. Thank you.

Mr. Siebert is correct

Normalization was a real effect in past years(over 4 yeasr ago if I am not mistaken). It was acknowledged by the SOM/TSN. In fact, credits were distributed for a short time to members who felt they had been wronged by this programming.

is it on now...i don't think so...but you never know.

My teams were normalized last night. They went 0-12.

Actually it was more than 4 years ago, it was during ATG2 (I think it was treymo, could be wrong who bought an entire league to prove it) and SOM 2002.

It was back when Bernie was a secondary guy and the main person was ESL (or was it ELS?) Anyways, back then I played mainly the SOM football game, which had it's own problems and just started dabbling in 2002 baseball leagues.

Eventually they said, yes it was on and turned it off.

Since Bernie has taken over, he has actually gone through the code and probably knows more about it than anyone who doesn't work for Hal directly. He has stated many times it is not on, and finally said he is done talking about it. I don't think he would turn it on just to screw us over after working hard to gain our trust all these years.

OK, I believe and trust Bernie. He's always courteous and professional, loves the game and has our best interests at heart.

My team's just tanking then. 7-23 since the season's midpoint, when I was 53-28.

I empathize with you. Given that most of the 30 games just after the midpoint of the season are out of division, maybe your team just doesn't match up as well with the teams not in the division as they do with those within the division. Just a possibility. Could be cold dice, too.

Keep the faith!

I just want to say that it's not just my one team, and it's not just my teams this year. This latest team is the most egregious example, but I've seen several opponent's teams do 180's from the first half to the second. It just doesn't feel right. But it might all be law of averages catching up, too.

Lawsuit Against Major League Baseball

Postby coyote303 » Fri Oct 07, 2011 10:04 am

The Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox today filed a lawsuit against Major League Baseball, alleging that the final month of the season had been normalized.

The teams in a join statement stated it's not fair that their teams should be punished for doing better than expected up to the point that normalization took effect.
