I was twelve years in in 1963. I went gaga when the PACKAGE was delivered by the mailman in the summer of 63. My ten year old brother and I played the 63 season that summer. We were in heaven. We bought cards every year until we went to college.
My son and I played many games together. We would replicate World Series games. One time we had the 75 series, Red Sox vs. Reds. Game six, Red Sox were down 3-2 and Bernie Carbo hit a homerun to tie the game in ninth inning in our game and someone cant remember who hit a GW in extra innings, strangely similar to real series. Reds won game seven. We talk about this game all the time, do you remember, etc, etc.
One school holiday we invite Joe O'C aka Tinley Snipers over to the house and we played strato all day. We used 75 Reds and Red Sox, 71 Orioles and Pirates, 63 Yankees, 55 Dodgers and a couple other teams. Joe kicked our butts.
I created my own Negro league cards, one sided. And played against the HOF series cards with their four teams. I embellished Pop Lloyds card and Smokey Joe Williams to elite status. Used anecdotal information from many books I had read. Pop and Smokey were considered by MLB HOFers some of the best ballplayers they ever saw. Babe Ruth and Honus Wagner said Pop Lloyd was the best ballplayer they ever saw. Sorry, Scott Simkus, vigorously disagree with Pop and Smokey have $7 and $6 mil cards. Pop needs and $11 mi card and Smokey needs a $10!!!!!!
