Minimum/maximum performances possible

Why not post a screenshot of the options you had turned on/off? It would be best if the ones that TSN SOM uses were checked.

[img:1bbd623c00]http://i1039.photobucket.com/albums/a475/voovits/Options.jpg[/img:1bbd623c00]

In the first season, every option was checked. I unchecked everything I deemed relevant to possible normalization for the second season.
I only have version 12, so a couple of the options from the screenshot on the Wiki are not available to me.

[quote:381bfae82d="nevdully's"]Yes but if that loss came late it coulda been the very beginning of normalization.

now that is a good sport!

Difference in what voovits did and what I did was he filled the card with strikeouts while I filled it with double plays. Figured the double plays would give the max advantage as it would create extra outs from lucky singles/walks off hitters cards early in innings.

But note either method of creating the ultimate pitcher resulted in a large number of HRs and BBs.

Yes his method produced a high number of stikeouts. That should not be surprising. The model does allow for extreme strikeout performances as you can add additional strikeouts to even the best pitcher cards out there just as you can add additional HRs, hits, or BBs to a hitters card to provide for ever greater record hitting seasons.

What cannot be replicated by the 50/50 method is historic lows in BBs, hits, HRs given up by a pitcher. Once you have 0 of these on a card it can get no better. Thus whether against allstars or regular single season lineups extreme pitching performances cannot be replicated.

If perfect cards such as I created and voovits created going against ordinary hitters are going to give up walk totals in the 40s neighborhood and HR totals of 10 or 20 it should be no surprise that even the best of ATG pitchers are giving up 50 or 60 per year.

The point is not to call for radical change to the strat model. I know that is not going to happen because it would cause compatability problems playing any newly generated cards with older already published cards. Mainly trying to illustrate one reason we see great hitters matching or even exceeding their real life numbers while our HOF pitchers never come close except in leagues that weed out all decent hitters via theme or salary cap. And to provide an illustration why pitchers could use the help of pitcher clutch.

Plus just having some fun as noted in the original post. And possibly generating something interesting for discussion.

Valen:

I think what you did is great. It shows that we will never have great pitching performances in the higher cap leagues. It is hard even in the $80 and $100M leagues.

Valen/Voovits:

Thanks for sharing! 8-)

I always wondered why Strat never split up the X rolls between the batter and pitcher cards.
I think that would potentially go a long way in balancing things.

Unfortunately, as already stated, it's too late to make any radical changes now due to compatibility issues across seasons.

Yep, I bet that's one they'd like to have back, but as you said fixing it now would require re-making every card they've ever produced...not gonna happen.

Then again the card images distributed on my cdrom game do not match up with he printed cards I purchased many years ago. So in theory that compatabliity is already busted.

So why not produce updated computer versions of all seasons that use an improved model? Just make them effective with the next version of the cdrom game. It does after all have every season available already and just needing unlocked by the copy protection scheme.

[quote:0e10c6f880="Valen"]For fun I created a 2010 player card. It is a pitcher I called Johnny Slider. So named because his slider is so good it unduces a gb(3b)A on every roll for his card. Results of a replay using 2010 American league with him pitching for the Seattle Mariners to provide advantage of a pitcher's park.

Results:
261 IP, 50 BB and 12 HRs. This is not against allstars. It was against regular 2010 AL lineups. This is the best pitching performance the game model is capable of reproducing. No matter how good a pitcher's control is or how good at keeping the ball in the park he will give up minimum numbers similar to these.

With this built-in bias towards offense is it any wonder historic pitching performances are never approached?[/quote:0e10c6f880]

Could not disagree more on "never get great performances" All you need to do is play the standard 80 million dollar league and you can achieve them all the time. Here is a very good performance from Pedro Martinez 44 walks in 253 innings vs card of 32 in 217 which transforms to 37 and gave up 21 home runs vs 17 in the which converts to 20 adjusted for the innings. On top of that used an 8 million dollar reliever.

So I was able to use a top pitching performance of all time and actually get an extra 17% more innings out of him than he knew he was capable of and still his ERA was within 0.17 of his actual card and the WHIP within 0.12

And I consider the Pedro of 2000 a historic performance myself.
