Out on Appeal?

In 70's game, this occurred:

BOTTOM OF INNING 2 ***
0 T.Grieve 4 Out On Appeal b-0
1 F.Millan 6 Ground Out b-0
2 M.Wills 2 Fly Out b-0

What does "out on appeal" mean? I don't think I've ever seen it before, it wasn't registered as a strike out, like he appealed that he didn't go around. And I have no idea what it would show up like on a batters or pitchers card. Any ideas?

It is the result of an X-chance from the pitchers card. Just like fan interference...these rare plays pop up every now and then.

On the super-advanced fielding chart (that TSN-SOM uses), first a split card is drawn from 1-20 to get the initial result.

Then three dice are rolled and added together to determine if an error is made. If the three dice combine to a "5," then a rare play has occurred. What the rare play is depends on the initial result (e.g., SINGLE-1) and what the original X result was (e.g., Groundball SS X).

I don't have a fielding chart in my possession, but I remember some of the possible rare results are pretty interesting.

Check outfield results D03 RP...there's an appeal play. You'll also find the hidden ball trick, throwing behind the runner, and fan interference etc.
