Lefty and Righty specialists??????????

Lefty and Righty specialists??????????

Postby dspeters5 » Mon Oct 17, 2011 11:32 am

I have had little success using lefty and righty secialists. I am considering giving up this strategy. When I check game highlights and lefty righty splits, HAL leaves these guys in too long, they face the wrong sided hitters and get whacked around. I have had Sambito and Clear for a number of drafts. There ERA's are always HIGH, like 7,8,9 or even higher. Especially lefty specialists. When I check there splits to see whom they are facing whether lefties or righties, it is too balanced. In other words HAL should have taken them out. Example, Mark Clear faces three righthanded batters, then HAL will leave him in for one or two or more lefty batters. With Lefties its worse, because so few left handed hitters.

I have settings on Quick, one or two innings, no IBB, do not face ____, lefty or righty specialist____ etc. Dont know what else to do. Any thoughts?[b:e46e829e5d][/b:e46e829e5d]

the are only viable on a team that has enough relief options otherwise. If your BP run thin, they will pitch entirely too much and be left in. If your bullpen is set up right you can get just 30-40 innings out of them and they will pitch decently, never perfectly.

Yeah. It's about depth of pen. Have a closer, a set up, a third guy. Then two LOOGYs and two ROOGYs.

I don't know that this is all that viable <140.

I have worst results in 200 mil leagues. I typically carry at least five relievers. I also carry seven SP's and one or two of those guys can relieve as well, so that should add to the stable as well. So you saying I need a ton of relievers so HAL recognizes the other options and does not leave him into long. I understand that. Now if I have a stud closer. Bruce Sutter, I want him to get 100 plus innings. Maybe I am too greedy. If I have too many relievers Bruce or Mo or Trevor get less innings as well.

My understanding is that if you check the various boxes, don't pitch to lefties or righties, quick hook, 1 or 2 innings etc., crazy things will happen. Just assign the pitcher you want in the specialist role and the computor will automatically assign the settings you need. That is the only way I've been able to get the specialist role to work properly.

If you want to max out Sutter, you want fewer options. There are some threads down about making the most of Babe Adams/Johnny Miljus that might be interesting to you.

I don't think you can get 100 quality innings out of Trevor Hoffman. R1 makes that hard. Sutter's R3 year, on the other hand, easy. 120 should be within reach. dunno about at 200, because the lineups are meat grinders.

Got 326.1 innings out of Sutter a few leagues back... 25 wins 32 saves 3.03 ERA and 1.08 whip. League MVP and Cy Young winner but came in 2nd in the Rolaids Relief Award to Jimmy Dygert??

Sutter = Stud.

You'd think so, but no. PKB mentions a previous thread about maximizing your RP stud. You might want to track that down for details.

I had most of my SPs on quick hook and had Sutter as setup first and middle man second, and slow hook. It might've been the other way around, middle man first, set up 2nd... No specification for 'Closer'.

I think one of the big keys that is mentioned in the thread referenced above is the rest of your RP stable. You can't have other R4 or R5 guys on the roster or HAL will use them, even if you put restrictions on their use.
