Another amazing trade offer

The question I have is what would be generally considered a fair straight-up trade for Martinez?

Maddux and who else?

keeping in mind that Pedro is one of the top few pitchers there are a number of possible combos if not straight up one for one deals that would be reasonable.

Also- I think what bothers us to a degree is the implication that 'we' (the manager who has him) dont 'get' the value of a Pedro, and therefor they should be traded for a pitcher who seemingly has more value i.e. a greater salary.

If thats the case then its exactly as Pet describes- one person attempting to take advantage of another.

I realize no one wants to overpay for a deal (myself included) but sometimes its hard to look at things plausibly another way.

...and V-
I was attempting to answer your statement that this is not a topic for discussion.
On the contrary, if there is a point to be made about the value of thsee players changing based on a specific context, then lets discuss-
I think we can all have the benefit of learning from each other.
(I mean this very seriously)

Obviously it's a bad trade but I'm also guilty in offering guys not named Pedro Martinez for Pedro Martinez.

Geez everyone complains how there's no trading and then gets outraged when someone tries to trade.

Agreed, but in an unlimited salary league, Why would I trade Joe Morgan for Robby Alomar.
We are 40 games into the season. Morgan has an OBP of .432
Alomar is .330, so it's not like I'm pissed that Morgan is under achieving.

Petro, I thought, did an excellent job of both reflecting on
the issue and articulating a strong point of view.

I would point out that in some cases, the "Life of Brian" factor
should be considered: some people like to haggle. Its only
one type of negotiation, and not the best, but it is legit. For
these people, a first offer is only an opening position. (In
the life of Brian sense, they should be insulted if you accepted
the opening offer).

Still, this does not seem to be the case here. And haggling
on 1:1 trades don't seem to open many options, not that I have
much experience here.

Well, maybe if you are firing spit balls.

Or maybe really slow change-ups. [/quote:27710ee92b]
Did not realize you had this good a sense of humor.
Fun to see this side of you. :D Seriously, thanks for posting this.

We have actually had some really good exchanges months and
months ago. I am just easy to forget.

And sincerely, I know some of my comments were negative,
but they were aimed at specific statements, not you as a
person. When I said before I enjoy reading your posts, I
meant it. That really hasn't changed.

You should be aware that large portions of the country
like to complain as part of the culture. Its not the devil,
its more like breathing. For instance, Boston, where I spent
many years.

Boston joke:

[quote:55da25b680]Bostonian 1: How's life?

Bostonian 2: Can't complain.

Bostonian 1: Ah, thats too bad.[/quote:55da25b680]

So to tell us we can't complain is like saying we can't play strat. Of
course, there are complaints and there are COMPLAINTS.... okay,
thats another issue.

Full disclosuere on the joke...

I am "okay" with the Red Sox, but I moved there and my
first team is the Twins. So flame at me for taking a shot
at Bostonians, I am not one of them.

I can't say I care much any more if the Red Sox win or
lose, but I did get a chuckle out one bloggers comment
about how the Red Sox look more like the Yankees:

[quote:46859e895c]I hate the Yankees, but I despise the Red Sox[/quote:46859e895c]

I guess thats supposed to mean, the Yankees kind of happened into
buying championships. With the Red Sox it's pre-meditation.

Petro,

Repeat after me:

SERENITY NOW, SERENITY NOW[/size:7e8143687e][/color:7e8143687e]

You are going to get offers you do not like. It is a fact of life. Not everyone has 30,000pts and all those games of experience you have.

And then throwing poor Merm under the bus like that. tsk, tsk...
...so he's made a couple of thousand bad trade offers... that's what makes him so lovable...
